Deer In the Headlights...On the Freeway?

How do they encourage the deer to use overpass crossings? Is the area bordering the highways fenced to lead them to the overpass? Are salt licks set up near it or something?

I was wondering the same thing. Deer will go anywhere. You can't just build something and expect them to follow directions. Doesn't it come habitually?

In the case of the one near me, yes, a fence is built to basically funnel them towards the overpass. Also, it's been designed to help it feel more like part of the natural environment by planting trees and grass.

Here's a good image detailing its design:

And here's a good general view from different ones around the world:

My wife hit a deer a few years ago, right around the corner from our house. Grazed might be more accurate as the deer managed to get away. Sadly we see dead deer on the highway almost every week this time of year.

Once the car ahead of me hit a deer that ran out right in front of them. The deer got knocked into the ditch at the side of the road. A pickup truck that was coming the other way did a quick u-turn and the guys in the truck went down and got the deer. It was hunting season and they had permits. That's getting a deer the easy way. I don't think that the car that hit the deer got anything worse than a small dent.
