Deep Space Nine/Defiant Flyby VFX shot

I like lens flares (overuse notwithstanding). But it doesn't sit right with me here. These aren't shiny models. I know they don't need to be for lights to flare when not reflecting on them, but it stands out like an effect added in post to an otherwise clean model shot.

But great work as always, Daniel!

I love the animation and the lens flare! It‘s so nice to see someone do something with Deep Space Nine. :techman:

Nice! Love it and the lens flare! Gives it a more modern feel, and it's used sparingly. My one nit with any footage or image of DS9 is that the station never seems massive. One of the things I love about DIS are the super closeups of the ship. Would love to see something like that done with DS9 someday.

Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the next one! Really getting some excellent stuff by multiple people in the Fan Art section these days!

Agreed. The station is supposed to be nearly a mile in diameter, but it never really looked like it did, due to several factors including but not limited to:
  • The size of visible features that have known or semi-known dimensions (e.g., Ops, the Promenade, etc.).
  • The apparent size of human-scale things like windows. Unless the windows on DS9 were a few stories tall, they tended to make the station look like it was a thousand feet in diameter, not five thousand. (The giant capsule-shaped windows on the Enterprise-D also suffered from this problem.)
  • The size of DS9 itself compared to other docked ships that have known dimensions. Even when the Enterprise-D paid a visit and docked at one of the upper pylons, the station just didn't seem that large, and the E-D was over two thousand feet long!
Although I think the Defiant looks a smidge too large in Daniel's excellent video, I'll give him a pass because (a) he's much more talented than I, (b) the video was hella kewl :) and (c) the Defiant was the TARDIS of Deep Space Nine. Each time she'd appear onscreen, the effing thing would seem to shrink or grow depending on the plot demands of the episode and which VFX team was working on that week's episode. And if a Klingon Bird of Prey appeared in the same frame? Fuggedaboutit. It. Was. Maddening.
