Declan Shalvey would like to write a DS9 comic for IDW

Declan Shalvey (Thunderbolts, Deadpool, Moon Knight & the 28 Days Later comics) talks about wanting to write a DS9 comic for IDW on Comic Book Resources.com. I hope IDW take note!

"Stephen Mooney: I remember you talked to Chris/IDW at one point about a Deep Space Nine story, would’ve LOVED to see that happen, knowing what a massive Trek fan you are. I think their DS9 slate was full at that point, though. Was that why it never happened?"

Shalvey: "Well, to be fair I don’t know when I would have found the time to do it in the last few years, but I think it was mainly that the Abrams movies were coming out and the tie-in books they had were successful, which maybe took attention from the books based in the previous continuity. I think they had a window to do those books around the movie books and not be overshadowed, and there was no way that would work with my availability. It was all just talk though in fairness; it wasn’t a definite plan and there was no official offer, just a bit of wishful thinking on both our parts. Who knows, maybe if everyone lobbies IDW to let me do a DS9 series it’ll happen some day!"

"I went with Deep Space Nine, as i haven't seen any DS9 comics of late, and if i had to pick a series to draw, it'd be DS9, cuz it was bad-ass. Man, i loved that show. Don't get me wrong, The Next Generation will always have a special place in my heart, as Captain Picard practically raised me, but DS9 had a darker tone, which is what really appealed to me as i went through my teens. Also, i think the darker setting of DS9 suits my work better."

Hell, I'd love to write the DS9 comics with Dec handling the art. Not that IDW has any interest in taking pitches from me. After all, I'm just some random New York Times bestselling Star Trek author who actually co-wrote episodes of the show....

Does IDW even have the license for DS9 anymore though? They probably should have produced a DS9/TNG crossover first and then gone from there.

As I understand it, they don't. And Fool's Gold went over so poorly that even if Scott Snyder and Jim Lee offered to do a Deep Space Nine comic for free, I don't know that IDW would license the property again.

I've been kind of surprised they haven't used more novelists or TV writers in the IDW comics. I would think it would be a great way for them to bring in new readers, and a little cross-promotion never hurt any one. I know not every one that writes in one medium writers in an another, but there does seem to be quite a bit of crossover. DC used several novelists over the years, and most of their issues seem to be highly regarded these days.

I'd love to see Declan write (and especially draw!) a DS9 series. He's a great artist. I've been following his work for a while. Did anyone catch the "Sunday Conversation" on CBR Declan did? They start talking about Leah Brahms at one point!

I would think it would be a great way for them to bring in new readers, and a little cross-promotion never hurt any one. I know not every one that writes in one medium writers in an another, but there does seem to be quite a bit of crossover. DC used several novelists over the years, and most of their issues seem to be highly regarded these days.

During Andrew Steven Harris's all-too-brief run as editor of the Trek IDW titles, he was trying to reach out to more novelists to work on the comics -- which is what led to my doing the Alien Spotlight: Klingons one-shot and why there was a New Frontier comic -- but he didn't last long enough for that to kick into high gear, and his successors have had his predecessors' interest in mining the stable of writers from the prose end, to wit, very little. (I know that, at the very least, myself, Dave, and Andy Mangels have reached out to IDW at various times, and I'm sure we're not the only ones....)

Hell, I've one of the few people who's written for both Star Trek and Doctor Who (and several of the others' first Who work was me hiring them for The Quality of Leadership), and I have a good working relationship with JK Woodward, so I'm only slightly bitter about not even being considered for the Who/Trek crossover.

I read both you're Alien Spotlight: Klingons, and the New Frontier comic, and really enjoyed them. They are part of why I wish they had let more of you guys write the comics. I realized, they also haven't many big name comic writers, which is also kind of surprising. I'm pretty sure there are probably quite a few successful comic writers out there who would like to write Star Trek. I've enjoyed the stuff that I've read, but there has still been a lot about IDW's handling of Star Trek that has been disappointing.

Andrew Steven Harris' departure pretty much explains why IDW didn't do much else with DS9 - there is a comment by him on Memory Alpha that the only reason the Star Trek Archives reprints came about was his desire to start publishing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. With Harris gone, so was support for DS9.
