December 2007 Writing Challenge: The New Era

Maximum Limit: 5600 words

When it starts: Now

When it Ends: December 30th 11:00 PM

Voting begins:: (or whenever someone posts that thread) The day of December 31st

Explanation Your mission - if you take it or not - is to write a fan fiction that involves "The New Era". This means that whatever you write about - it has to take place immediately following or during The Dominion War. It must also note the changing of times - ranging from culture shifts (as Starfleet becomes more of a military origin), the individual change, or so on. There'll be extra cookies if you can use a famous character - Scotty, Janeway, Sisko, and so on - reacting towards this shift/change of this "new era".

For example, Doctor Bashir has to face to a new shift in his friendship with Garak, or, Admiral Janeway dealing with the fact that her XO is now a Captain (because she got promoted,e tc.)....

What does this mean, exactly? Ordinarily, voting begins as soon as the contest ends. Does this mean you will stop accepting submissions at 11:00 pm on the 30th, but won't be posting the poll until some time on the 31st?

According to Memory Alpha, the events of DS9 "What You Leave behind" take place in 2375, and the events of "Endgame" occur in December 2377. Janeway could not have been promoted to Admiral until the following year--2378.

So, exactly how long after end of the Dominion War can a story be set? At least three years, by your examples--but can it be more? And if so, how many more?

I ask this because your answer will determine whether or not I can submit a Supermax story. The events of Supermax, Season One take place in the year following Voyager's return to the Alpha Quadrant--2378. The events of Season Two take place in 2379.

The story can take place both during and after the Dominion War - so by that reckoning - 2374 onwards. The basic gist is that a change is chartered both as a product of war and the aftermath of it. Thus the change can be a delayed one (due to PTSD) and/or an immediate one (due to X battle). In your case Camelopard - I see no problem with the timing of your entry - as so long as it: a) documents a change & b) addresses the them of a "new era" (i.e. changes wrought from 2374/Dominion War onwards*).

*I am also rather flexible and one can set it after ST:Nemesis and the effects of Picard's kicking of the short Reman rule of that entity. As so long as the story is set in the present and addresses the above themes, it's fine by me.

Aww CRAP! I know jack-squat about the Dominion War because I never watched that much DS9! It's pre-Nemesis, though, right? No one knows what the TNG crew was up to during that time, which of course means I can be creative, but still! It has to involve some sort of change coming from war, and I don't know it!


(I was kinda hoping for a Christmas theme or something fun this month...)

Yeah, but that's so depressing... I swore to myself I'd never write a post-Nemesis fic anyway.

Yes.

The theme is very much about "change" - whether for good or bad. The main focus is 'change'. Of course - for those that might not want to write about depressive stuff (i.e. the Dominion War), there is the passing of the torch of Picard to Riker and/or other things that have happened throughout the Dominion War - such as Voyager coming home (& the change their crew have to face), the actual celebrating of X-mass by the said crew, and so on...
