I never understood this rivalry. Is it because of the similar titles, are popular and that they're both set in space?


Star Wars is about a galaxy at war, set in a distant galaxy in a distance past, with the wars mainly the result of a religious war between the Jedi and Sith. The galaxy, judging at least by the movies, seems to be mostly totally explored and integrated.

Star Trek is about an almost utopian society in our galaxy, in our future, where people explore the unknown and ocassionally combat threats or bad guys who don't share their idealism.

Exactly. I'm not sure why some seem to think it's serious--like an office-mate of mine who thinks Shatner really means it, high-pitched Darth Vader voice and all, and is all angry at him thereby.
