I think it's a coincidence because it's being released today in the UK. You would think the UK distributors would be more apt to release it on their countrywoman's birthday than we would.

^ True. Like I said it's just probably an excuse for the retailers to have an exclusive Harry Potter release day night.
True. Just two more major Harry Potter releases after this one. I'm really gonna miss it all once it's done.
Here, I'm just used to dvd's coming out on Monday (and in this case, HP 2 dvd edition was going for £7 at one of the local supermarket)

This has happened a number of times in the past. I've seen it done with DVD/BR releases - Avatar, I believe, in one of its versions - and CDs. It's a stunt to separate it out from the pack, though except for The Incredibles hitting Blu-ray today I don't really see anything overly spectacular.
I've known about this for weeks. It wasn't a surprise decision.
The quandary I have is whether to buy it now, or wait till the "Ultimate Edition" release, since they're fast-tracking 5 and 6 to come out in a month or two, so presumably 7 and 8 (or a double-size 7) will be out by Christmas. They're usually pretty good at including all past special features in the big sets, but do I want to wait? Hmmm... (Normally double-dipping these types of releases is a no-brainer "No" with me - I always default to waiting for the bigger sets - but with Harry Potter and the expected two-part release of Doctor Who Season 6 I've got a couple "exceptions to the rule" to consider this year.)

Side comment: Tuesday's were set as video/DVD release day years ago at the request of retailers who wanted to drive foot traffic to their stores during the week. The Friday releases are few and far between, and done to make them stand out.
As for double dips, yes there will be, there always will be. You'll find collecting DVDs/Blu-rays to be a lot less stressful if you just accept this as a fact of life. For myself, I found myself never really getting into all the special features on all my DVDs, so now if the first release is "good enough", then I buy it, and I'm okay. If they double dip, first I ask myself if I've even gotten around to watching the first one.
I will double dip for something like a massively expanded director's cut or something. I bought the LOTR theatrical cuts knowing the extendeds were coming and I bought those too. Harry Potter I've been buying the first releases, and I'll wait for a super-duper mega box (and even then it will have to totally knock my socks off to get a purchase).

I saw advertised a bluray boxset of "Harry Potter years 1-7 part 1" and I thought, who on Earth would buy a boxset knowing there is just one more film to come and will be out by the end of this year and a new, complete, boxset will be out?
Plus, you also can tell if a double-dip is imminent. For example, anyone who has been paying attention has seen those big "Harry Potter Ultimate Edition" box sets for the first 4 movies. 5 and 6 will be released in a month or two. Do the math and you'll realize there will be Ultimate Editions for 7 and 8 (especially as they're advertised in the sets!), with release around Christmas a near certainty (with the initial Deathly Hallows 2 release probably in October).
No one is holding a wand to anyone's head forcing you to buy any of these editions. I chose to buy the Blu-ray for Deathly Hallows 1 this week because I wanted to see it. And I will purchase the Ultimate Edition whenever it comes out, so I have the complete set. I won't buy the "Years 1-7" sets because that's an unnecessary double-dip.
I bought Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol knowing full well it'll be on the Series 6 box set later this year. But I did research and found out one of the special features on the single release isn't expected to be included in the box set. So I made the decision to buy it now rather than wait.
Occasionally a double-drip is patently obvious. Sin City and Avatar were initially released in fully vanilla editions. And yet people were surprised with multi-disc special editions showed up a few months later.
It's the way films are marketed now. So you develop the sixth sense and pick the edition that most appeals to you. The only way the studio screws anyone is if the consumer isn't paying attention. And with the Internet and forums like this there really is no excuse to not be informed. Just go on Amazon, for heaven's sake.

I picked up Part 1 for my niece on Friday- I had it on reserve at Moviestop so I could get her the free wand with it. I was surprised, too, when I found out it was a Friday, but MovieStop had no explanation as to why. A lot of their locations were having Thursday night 11 pm Midnight release parties, but a Thursday late night for kids really isn't that much different from if it had been a Monday night release party- which they also often do for big Tuesday releases. This was probably just some Potter gimmick.
Tuesdays can be a pain, too, but it is what is expected now. I always figured New Release Tuesdays were to get people to go out and shop on a non weekend. Although I guess that doesn't matter now if people reserve or mail order anytime. I miss the good old Mom and Pop video stores. Acutally, if not for MovieStop, I really wouldn't know where to buy movies anymore. Sometimes Target or Best Buy have other exclusive treats, but only for new stuff, you can't find obscure DVDs there. I hate WalMart and they are the same way.
