"Deal Breaker" for you?

number6

Vice Admiral
So far I am pretty optimistic that this film could be pretty good and worth the wait. Forget about rumours and stick with what you know.

If you heard a news item about a detail so eggregious that it would make you stay home, what would it be??

How eggregious would it have to be to keep you from wanting to see this film?

For myself, I hope that Robert April isn't forgotten in the Captain Lineage.

I also hope that they don't make the characters too "contemporary" the way it was with SAAB, nuBSG, B5, Andromeda, LIS, etc.

I hope the story captures the spirit of the original show.

Right now there is nothing horrible enough to keep me from being there on Opening Day. I am curious to see what they pull off and how.

I hope to get some real thought and not just bashing based on current rumours, or some silly parody.

The floor is yours.

That it stinks. I'm going to be pretty damn forgiving on this one. But if the initial reviews are terrible, I'll wait until it gets to the $3 movie/pizza/beer theater to see it.

Otherwise, I'm open for change.

Only if it's a remake like Miami Vice or Halloween.
I honestly couldn't care less is Shatner or any of the other original cast members are in another Trek movie or not.

So long as it isn't Smallville in space or whatever teen show is popular right now.

I'm hoping they've gone more for a Casino Royale reboot, gritty and true to character.

I must admit that I'm not crazy about this new film being made, but I will still see it, regardless of what they do or change.

Because, at the end of the day, it's just a movie.

I just don't want it to be hopelessly self-referential like a grocery shopping list to be checked off as one goes, like Nemesis. If I hear it is, I won't bother.

As long as I can find a few reviews--from both critics and fans--that don't paint it as a complete stinker, I'm in. Otherwise it's wait and go to the cheap theatre.

Unless they use baby seals' skins for the captain's chair, I'll see it.
In the worst case scenario, I've wasted two hours of my life. And it's not like I would have spent that time researching a cure for cancer.

I agree with number 6... the only thing that'll make me hate this new film is if the characters are all gritty and conflicted, angst-driven and emo. One of the ugliest trends I've seen in recent years is that stories are always filled with characters none of whom are actual good guys. Heroes is a perfect example... I am getting very tired of that show because no one seems to be of pure motive.

I hope the new Star Trek captures the sense of adventure and optimism TOS had, and somehow achieves that charming, hopeful tone without seeming sappy.

But dark sets and darker characters - no thank you.

It's hard to describe my deal breaker because it's not any one element or item of canon (if there's a good reason for it, anything could be rebooted - go ahead and look at the Rommies, see if I care).

In general, it's gotta "feel" like Star Trek, which means no nuBSG doom & gloom, but that still leaves things pretty wide open.

I guess if Chris Pine really sucks as Kirk, that would be a deal-breaker. They gotta get Kirk and Spock right.

Heroes is a perfect example... I am getting very tired of that show because no one seems to be of pure motive.

What?!? What about Peter! He's too stupid to have a nefarious, self-interested motive. Same goes for Mohinder, come to think of it...and Hiro...even Matt is basically a nice guy, not his fault he's been inflicted with powers that can only be used for evil...and Maya's in the same boat...how many Polyannas do you want in one show, anyway? nuBSG it ain't. Thank GOD for Sylar and HRG.

The guardian of forever. If that's in it I'll know immediately that it is far worse than I thought. I will definitely NOT go see it. I'm proud to say I didn't see Nemisis nor rented it.

OK, I'm gonna tangent here, but HRG who seemed to be total villan at first, seemed to be redeeming himself toward the end. And take the company... is it good or evil? Mohinder has changed sides twice in recent weeks and now shot his partner, the guy who seemed to be redeeming himself... his loyalties fluctuate all over the place. Matt is driven by revenge and daddy isssues, Claire has a chip on her shoulder about her adoptive father.

I'll give you Hiro (who nonetheless betrayed friendship for love despite instantly regretting it), Peter and Maya.

I just like nice clean lines... good guys vs bad guys... but in Heroes you can't tell the players without a scorecard any more.

OK, I'm done... I know, I know... take it to another thread.

Maybe if they get Shatner in the film after all, but only on the condition that he appears without pants.

Nah. I'd probably still see it.

Just like any other film, I won't see it if I simply don't feel like it.

There is no mathematical Star Trek formula that the result could determine a sudden reversal of my previous decision.

As my sig says, I will not see this film if William Shatner has not been revealed to be a part of it between now and its release date.

I know many around here disagree with that stance, but I stand by it.

That it was a crap movie -- there's no other reason, really.

Nothing would prevent me from seeing the movie.

Absolutely Right.

The test is whether I'll see it again and buy it when it comes to DVD.
Exactly! If it's good or better, I'll go back a few times. If not, I'll have given it a chance.
