Deadline: Trek 2 May Be Pushed to Holiday 2012

Bah! Can J.J. not fit the thing in his schedule?!? I miss the days when the films were helmed by unsuccessful directors who were desperate for the work! Frakes never would have let this happen!>!

It's not JJ, it's more the fault of the writers. For various reasons, the script is taking longer than they probably thought. Possibly because they have so many other projects going on (including at least 3 television shows, and a handful of films). They're essentially spread too thin and Trek is a victim of their success.

I think maybe they have to change their priorities then. Trek XI was a huge blockbuster. Shouldn't they be spending their time on the script for a sequel to that rather then writing scripts for tv shows??

Like others have said delaying it until Holidays 2012 could be a disaster. With so many potential blockbusters coming out at that time Trek will have a very narrow window. Hmm I am starting to get worried about this movie. I cant believe after the huge success of the last movie it seems the studio is just letting Trek 2 sort of sit in limbo for all this time and then risk the future of the franchise against such stiff competition if it has to compete with The Hobbit etc...

Perhaps Paramount has seen the outline (and the critical beating Transformers 2 took) and aren't as certain as they once were that the sequel is a summer tent-pole film?

They should do whatever they want to as long as they are keeping the studios happy, thus why they have steady employment.

Potentially if this was a Pre-Abrams Star Trek.

Summer 2012's schedule which has a lot more fierce competition.

There's no reason to.

Keep in mind that all this speculation is coming off nothing more than a rumor.

Summer 2012's schedule which has a lot more fierce competition.

There's definitely more competition during the Summer, but also more time to make money since kids are on summer break. As we saw with Trek XI, the franchise played very strong with families, had good mid-week numbers, and stayed in the Top 10 for over 8 weeks.

Aren't there also more potential ticket-buyers in the summer months?

All of this is only a concern if this is "Star Trek: Nemesis" or any other kind of Trek. At least Winter 2012 means a lot more time for promotion, for instance they can even attach trailers on to some of those big Summer 2012 films (and yes, I know they can do this if it's out in summer too.) Comic Con '12 would certainly be big too. I'm in favor of a Winter 2012 release personally. Hell, just as long it's released.

It really does beg the question... wtf have they been doing for the past two years?!

24 months and just a 70 page outline? Obviously they have other projects, but come on!

moving it to summer 2013 means a long gap between films. I'm not sure there's such a thing as momentum in blockbuster franchises, but wouldn't you think you'd want to follow up huge hits like "Star Trek" sooner rather than much, much later?

A move to 2013 could be an advantage, as in theory during 2012 you could shoot two films back to back. And release them a year apart.

Besides a longer gap can help a film, it becomes more of an event movie if it's once every 4 years instead of every other year.

That would require them to write TWO scripts, which would probably take them another three years to write. :techman: HAHAHAHAH

Really whilst the wait is slightly annoying, it makes you more eager to see it. And I'd rather they took the time and did it right than rush it to make a deadline. Didn't Insurrection suffer from that they worked to a deadline instead of waiting till everything was right with the script?
