Captain Phil is still in this season as filming wrapped up before his death. It'll be an awkward season and I am curious how they handle it.
My husband loves this show. I imagine they will have foreboding narration and music during his scenes and make it bittersweet, but hopefully the won't try to fully cash in and just not show the Cornelia Maria for the second half of the season. It looks like they didn't do King Crab or weren't filmed for it.

It would be kind of gimmicky if they kept showing flashes of his doctor's visit from last season in black and white. I'm a little tired of that already from the recap hour they keep repeating twice a day.

So this would technically be the last season with him then? I'll definitely try to catch the premiere.
According to the news coverage of his death, he died during production of the season, and in fact apparently gave the OK to be filmed during his recovery. Whether any of that makes it to air, of course, we don't know.
Assuming DC follows its usual format, there's actually two seasons in one - the King Crab session and the Opilio Crab winter session, and I understand that Phil died during Opilio (which makes sense as he died during the winter).
The new season doesn't start in Canada for another week or so, and I'm also curious to see how they handle it. A new version of the "World is Such a Brilliant Place" singalong ad has begun airing, and there's one clip where the Deadliest Catch guys -- including Phil -- are shown singing "We love to crab fish..." and it's actually a bit depressing to see that. The ad they're showing promoting the new season is pretty dark in tone, with Sig and other captains in voiceover talking about whether their crews could continue on if they weren't there...
Depending how things go, I have to wonder if this might be the last season for the series in general. The guys were looking pretty haggard last year, and now one of them is no longer with us. There was a special about herring fishing that aired on Discovery Canada last week and of all ships the Time Bandit from DC was one of the ships involved - it was interesting to see how they worked things away from the crab.

He fell ill (stroke I think?) while in port for an offload and died in the hospital a week or so later. According to the boat's website, they filmed his time in the hospital with his permission, and it was up to Discovery if/how to air it.

I feel like they milked that fight quite a bit... but then again, it feels like they were building to that last season anyway.
The Jake switch was also fairly contrived and I wonder if that would have happened if there weren't TV cameras around.
One thing about the show I enjoy (and I guess I shouldn't) are the coast guard episodes. Of course, every time the coast guard is called out means that something horrific may have happened, but I find that drama more gripping than the actual crab fishing stories now.

I thought, so far anyway, they handled it well last night. It seems my DVR started about a minute too late and ended about a minute too late, so I don't know if they'd tacked on any kind of "In memory of Capt Phill" at the end or not.
Otherwise a good episode, contrived or not. I guess I didn't mind them "milking" the fight because I can't stand that Keith guy anyway.
EDIT TO ADD: It was hard at times watching Capt Phil knowing what was coming. It also struck me that assuming his son stays with Capt Sig for the duration of the King Crab season, that Jake isn't going to get that one final season with his dad. So sad.

Yeah, that seemed so pointless and designed for TV. I'm sure they wouldn't be in port at the same time... but why not just have the Jakes switched off until the end of season if it was such a big deal?

I suspect the high seas made those options unavailable, but it should have also made what they did unavailable. Good grief I thought that was pointless and stupid. And I believe Firehawk12 hit it right on the money, it was probably done solely for the sake of TV.
In fact I kind of lost a little respect for them, both boats that is, over that. I've always thought this show was a little better than most when it came to the "do it for the camera bullshit," but I guess not.
Well considering how often they play the "fall overboard and die in two minutes" card on the show, I'd tell whoever to screw themselves if they think I'm volunteering to go overboard in a survival suit or not. One tear or leak and your dead. I deal with drysuits and they do leak, very frequently.
If the boats crash against each other they could all sink...
Anyway, I used to love this show, but I'm getting tired of it now. It used to be the sea creating the drama, now it's just BS. Maybe they've told all the stories that needed to be told about this industry...
Not to be a ghoul, but I think they should just switch to following the Coast Guard. There you have real life and death drama without throwing people into the water.
I'm still watching this season but can't say that I will again.
I believe it was done at sea because the boats couldn't be in port at the same time, a requirement for both to have their crews in full.
