I wouldn't mind too much if they brought back the dynamic they had in Flashpoint. That was really interesting.

I agree with Dennis don't like the ass hole version of Billy. I guess Johns like Lucas thinks that to be cocky you have to a douche as well. Billy's portrayal reminds me of Anakin.
I've always wondered why the the guy with 500 wives utter hedonism didn't kick in.
Or rapist Zoophiles and massmurderers like the rest of the Shazam Club?
Only the cluless purity of a tiny child could dull all that willingness to cut babies in half into workable heroism.

So we got a Banner vs Hulk thing going on here if Asshole Billy is retardedized down into Captain Marvel, that he has to sacrifice half his IQ to become godlike powerful and hen he has to resentfully deal with perfect clarity of his adventures after the fact.
Billy could hate being Captain Marvel while still being literally addicted to the power.

The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #5 to #7: I've been a big Firestorm fan for most of my life and want to stick with this title, but it's hard to hang on and I'm considering dropping it.
Justice League Dark #6 and #7: I like the idea of a team of heroes using magic more than I like the actual stories. The art at the beginning of the second arc is pretty impressive though. The panels are almost life-like oil paintings. What I don't like is that the story continues in I, Vampire. I'll probably just flip through the relevant issues of that title at the store. I have no interest in actually getting it. I don't like the vampire arc anyway. Glad it's coming to an end.

It's really not the best direction to go with Billy.
Read Shazam/Superman First Thunder. It's a very good exploration of a kid who has been endowed with powers no man should have and basically in over his head . The whole last issue with his dead friend and revealing his identity to Superman really is probably the best depiction of Captain Marvel I have seen.

There was a pretty successful children's book series recently about an innocent "gosh golly gee" orphan type who developed magic powers and, as a result, underwent all sorts of character development without turning into a paint by number gritty modern DC character. You might have heard of it. I'm sure executives at DC's parent company have.
Not every comic book needs to be exactly like every other. Some characters, like Batman, lend themselves more to grim and gritty adult fare. Shazam was, and should be, a children's comic book. An introduction to superheroes.
You'd think that, with the success of young adult/kids books like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc., DC/WB would be scouring their back issues for characters to market to kids.
Capt. Marvel, with all his "gosh golly gee" could have been DCs/WBs answer to "the Incredibles" and "Megamind." Too bad no one at the companies seems to have the slightest idea what to do with any property not named "Batman."

Freddie Freeman is Captain Marvel Junior. His super hero god body is that of a child the same age as he is, who is lame, literally, has to walk with a crutch, and CMJ's (A name he went by briefly as a Titan in the 90s.) uniform is identical to Captain Marvel, except that it is Blue instead of red. To transform into Captain Marvel Junior, he has to say the magic words "CAPTAIN MARVEL" which is the height of irony since while fighting evil he can't say his own name without retransforming into a 10 year old cripple kid.
Briefly between final crisis and flashpoint, Billy got to take over the Wizard Shazam's job guarding the Rock of Eternity.and Judd Winick wrote a book with Howard Porter about how the SHAZAM powers were put into play and Freddie had to earn those powers back while evil conspired to change the orientation of the universe from mostly good to mostly evil by undercutting freddie.

Why does it have to be one cliche or the other?
It doesn't surprise me that Johns seems to be going with the Flashpoint version of the Marvel errrr Shazam family. He usually sticks with concepts that he likes. Just don't like this version of Billy in particular. I've only read the one part so far since I dropped Justice League and that was enough for me.
That was great.
