DC Universe Online Release 01.11.11

Now why did I just find this out today? Had I known this, I would've saved my $100 Target gift card. :( I've been anticipating this game for a long time, being a DC comic fan and MMO player. I played City of Heroes for a number of years, the only MMO I really did like, before I grew tired of its repetitive missions, slow progression, and massive debt, etc. Now it's time to move on!

Anyone else playing this game? I'm getting the PC version. Let's discuss.

Un. f*cking. believable. :scream:

Right after work, I drove through traffic and bad weather to buy a PC version of this game, which is supposed to be released today. Target didn't have it. Best Buy, which had a million PC and console games on display, didn't have it. GameStop, which sells mostly console games, didn't have it at the location I went to. Even Toys 'R Us didn't have it. WTF? :wtf: I wasted a whole hour going to different places in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest metropolitans in the U.S., and none of the stores I went to had the game, not because they ran out of it; they simply didn't have it in stock!

I've got to hand it to Sony Online Entertainment: Worst Marketing Strategy ever.

Odd. I stopped in at one of the local Best Buy stores today (moderately large city in Indiana) to pick up a couple movies, and saw several copies of DCUO in several different locations.

I logged into the beta a few times, but never had much time to spend with it. I enjoyed what I did play, though I'm undecided as to whether or not I'll buy the game and start subscribing regularly. I'm more interested in The Old Republic.

Well, I'm feeling soured by the ordeal I had to go through.

I've also been reading the on-line game manual, and it looks a lot like other MMOs I tried before and didn't like. While I'll admit it appears to have a more intuitive user interface than, say, Star Trek Online, I don't really care for the "sloppy" inventory system. When I played City of Heroes, the power tray was separate. The enhancements tray was separate. I don't need items like "piece of bread" or "wolf skin" or "magic cloak" that's not essential to gameplay.

Hehe. I'm having fun with it, but I've got to admit it's because of the IP involved. I've never played City of Heroes or Champions Online; and I would not have been interested in this except that it's DC.

I loved DCUO a little too much, I think. I was involved in the Beta, and it was scary how much of my life that game sucked away. Even worse considering I spend a lot of my free time gaming anyway, usually with 2 or 3 games on the go at once, and while I was playing the DCUO beta nothing else was getting a look in.

I'll probably pick it up at some point down the line, cause it really is a fun game, but with me currently playing CoD, RDR & Fallout: New Vegas, and with Dead Space 2 and Killzone 3 out in the next few months, I'll probably leave it til Summer.

Call me cheep but I kind of want them to release a demo just so I can muck about with the character creator.

Can't see myself ever playing the game proper, subscription based games of any description are decidedly unappealing. I like to be able to keep the games I own and be able to choose when I feel like playing them or not playing them and not have to worry about wasting money because I still have a few weeks left on the subscription. Plus these things are out of necessity specifically crafted to take forever to get to the interesting stuff and are never ending time sponges. Less a hobby, more of a substance abuse habit.

To be honest, if you want to play around with the character creator I would recommend get Champions Online. That's about the only thing Champions does leaps and bounds better.
It might improve down the line, but at this time the creator is very limited and a lot of the costume customization happens in-game. You can basically only choose between 3 physical builds (tiny, medium and large), skincolour and haircolour.

I was considering this for a second MMO (next to me STO career officer account), but knowing other MMOs are coming, I'm reconsidering.

That said, it is tempting to try this out, even if it would be brief. I would just be hard pressed to create one since the game has you create an original DC hero, while truth be told, I'd rather be similar to another hero, if it be Superman, Batman, or even Green Lantern (or even be part of the GLC). I know there's an option for that from the vids I've seen, but it's just not enough to go out and get it.

To anyone that is on this MMO, have fun.
