Spoilers DC TV Arrow/Flash Universe Crossover Discussion

Does The Menagerie even count as a clip show considering the episode from which the clips were taken didn't air for another 20+ years?

Yeah. That story used clips of an (at the time) unreleased episode to tell its own story, so its completely different from what I'd consider a normal clip show.

The Menagerie is not a clip show. A clip show would be consisting of clips from previous episodes. TM interspersed clips of TOS and an unaired pilot. It was all new to broadcast.

From a production standpoint, yes. Clip shows are episodes that repurpose pre-existing footage in order to save the production time and money. If the recycled content happens to be new to the audience, that's a nice bonus, but it's irrelevant to the functional and logistical reasons why clip shows are made. "The Menagerie" was a way to compensate for falling behind schedule by making two episodes' worth of content in a single-episode production slot. And it's not the only time a show used its unreleased pilot footage to make a clip/flashback episode. Gilligan's Island did that with their first-season Christmas episode "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk." There was even a Xena: Warrior Princess episode that used a failed spinoff pilot as an extended historical flashback.

The Incredible Hulk did some good clip shows...light on the clips, heavier on the character stuff in the original stories.

I see your hyperbole is still as strong as ever. If only it could be harnessed for good...

No, being over the top ridiculous does.

In this case, kirk55555555 , is actually articulating an opinion many people have, though they might be a bit more tolerant of watching it. He's right...It won't be vital to the show's story, and can be missed if they really really dislike musicals.

For many years I didn't like musicals either. But an NPR interview with the creator of LaLa Land said that musicals for him are done as a purposeful break to escape reality, which I immediately connected with superhero shows and movies.

So this probably won't be my favorite episode, but I'll still watch. And my girls will probably still love the episode.

I understand the love for NPH, but I think Darren Criss, being a Glee alum, is a great choice. But it makes me pine for a Prison Break reunion again. (Speaking of which..Where is Captain Cold?)

I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen them bring any other Prison Break cast members onto LoT yet.
well, we already have Clock King and COunt Vertigo, but since Rory and Snart are now practically good guys...?

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Robert Knepper as Clock King and Peter Stormare's 2nd Vertigo. Now we just need the Legends to run into them.
That reminds me, have we heard anything about if the PB revival effected LoT? Should we expect Mick to disappear for a few episodes later in the season?

Regarding the topic of whether or not the musical crossover will be "throwaway", it's been said by one of the EPs on the shows that its events will in fact have noticeable impact on the involved series' respective narratives.

So who do we know for sure will be singing?
Grant Gustin
Melissa Benoist
Darren Criss

Cool thanks. I realize after my post that Garber, Martin and Barrowman were going to be singing too.
I didn't know about Valdes or Jordan though.
David Harewood will be on The Flash, but he has said he won't be singing.
At least this time we'll actually be getting some more Supergirl characters coming over the Earth-1.

John Barrowman is in the crossover? I thought this was Supergirl and Flash only.

The whole reason they're doing this episode is because they have a bunch of impressive singers and Broadway performers in their various casts and want to give them all the chance to strut their stuff. So they've built the story around getting all their strongest singers together, regardless of what series they're from. It'll be interesting to see how they contrive to bring Martin Stein and Malcolm Merlyn to Central City.

it seems like an easy enough "fix". The Legends and the Legion could easily both in Central City for reasons related their own ongoing conflict and Stein and Merlyn get swept up in the events of the Flash episode.

Yeah, but I'm curious to see just how that would be done. Would it be set up in LoT beforehand? Will the storylines dovetail? And just how would Merlyn, a character who has no ties to anyone in The Flash, let alone Supergirl, play a role in the story? The question isn't just how he'd get there, it's what he could do while he's there that wouldn't feel totally random or tacked on.
