DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I have wondered if we'll see some grim and gritty Snyder style characters, with Superman being a contrast to them and a beacon of kindness and hope.

Can we not, please? Just let the new films be their own thing, instead of a reaction against the previous thing. At least, let's stop giving Zack Snyder credit for inventing grim and gritty superheroes when he was just copying what Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns did decades earlier.

Anyway, if they've got Guy Gardner, that's all the contrast Superman needs.

I mean it's better that they're included in service to the film's own story rather than as setup for other films.
Ah.
And another supporting character has joined the cast - Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho

Um ... okey-doke.

I remember enjoying Carrigan on Gotham.
That's open to interpretation as well.
There can be a secondary Jimmy Olsen story, or Ma and Pa Kent story, the villain story or anything peripheral but still important to the Superman and Lois story.
Superman family characters? Sure, please.

Nobody who's job it is to sell you something is ever going to tell you it's shit.

Unless they want and are trying to get sacked the long way round.

True, but it was/is also his job to sell Shazam 2, Aquaman 2 and Blue Beetle and he hasn't gone even half as hyperbolic on them. He wasn't going to call it bad but nothing forced him to say 'one of the greatest ever'.

Not every film can be the best film ever, none of them (I think) cost as much as Flash and of the two yet to come, there's still time for him to get hyperbolic, they're not out yet.

I think the issue with the Flash was how expensive it was, and the strategy was to oversell it to try to get as much return on that as possible. Selling these movies is part of Gunn's job, including the ones he inherited, so he's going to push them no matter their perceived quality.

But producers and writers would never say anything disengenous to sell a product/surprise people watching! They don't care about money and being honest to fan questions is more important than preserving the surprise of their project!

Just call me "few," then.

Still, I'm trying to accept the counsel of some of my favorite posters not to kneejerk overreact.

And here's more reassurance from Gunn:

Still, the fact you have a number of other heroes in the film (and I seriously doubt Fillion will be some cameo on the level of Affleck and Gadot in The Flash or Cavill in Black Adam) means WB+D is all about building the universe in its first DCU film (hit the ground running, so to speak), rather than have a handful of solo movies introduce the characters and/or their reason to be. If that's the case, one can doubt the film will be another Superman-as-the-only-hero / pure origin story. Arguably, that plotting ship has sailed.

So we have the asshole hero, the violent hero, the freak/ outcast hero and Mr. Terrific who could slot into any or all of those in addition to being the brilliant hero.

Superman’s “legacy” will be teaching Guy to be less of an asshole, Hawkgirl to be less violent, teaching Rex that people will judge him by his actions not his looks, and whatever Mr. Terrific needs to be a better hero.

I hope this isn’t the film, but those characters are just an odd collection of characters with little connection to each other outside of Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific who were in the JSA.

If the film moved in that direction, it would present a Superman assuming he can tell other heroes how to behave in class--essentially being some parental figure who has to do whatever he can to get--what we can guess will be experienced heroes--to "find their purpose for being a hero". That is not a plot to look forward to. It would undermine the on-the-job experiences of the individual heroes by someone who would just believe he knows the "right way" to be a hero for characters as dissimilar from each other (in methods , beliefs, etc.) as a raindrop and broken glass. In ZSJL, Bruce Wayne recruited some wildly dissimilar heroes, but respects their experiences enough to want them for a dangerous job, but he was not trying to send them through Superhero Finishing School. That's how a team film should unfold.

Just remember every time Gunn tells you what you want to hear, he also called 'The Flash' one of the greatest superhero films ever made.

Something to remember.

How many superheroes are in this film, considering its title is "Superman: Legacy"? It's beginning to remind me of "Captain America: Civil War" and not in a good way.

How many superheroes were in a film called "The Flash"?
And that was nothing like Civil War, in any way.

Well, Civil War is not a great template for film.

But, considering that Superman can work in a team more heroes here is less bothersome to me. Sometimes Superman needs a decent foil to work off of.
