DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I disliked Snyder's overall style enough I haven't bothered even watching the Snyder Cut, but the theatrical cut was easily the worst movie in the DCEU and one of the worst superhero movies I've ever seen. Just because Superman was reconceived as somewhat closer to the classic version doesn't make it a better film. It's just horribly awful for completely different reasons.

Snyder cut also makes it look so much worse. There are scenes we blamed Snyder for that turned out to be Whedon scenes. An also, Snyder Cut flows with the other movies. You can't just say it's the same universe when everyone acts like a different person...

Whedon had no business helming any DCEU film, certainly not a team movie where his cartoony approach, utter misunderstanding of the characters and the established film universe would lead to a disaster anyone would see coming.

There's a reason ZSJL was greenlit, and it successfully carried the work in the preceding films forward for WB/DC's only coherent, strong filmed universe of its properties.

There are multiple unrelated factors that mistakenly mixed together.

WB was unhappy with what JL was while he was filming it.

Not clear how much he was willing to adjust it based on their suggestions. Directors always get notes from studios. Very few directors have total control of finished product.

He left due to the tragedy of his daughter’s death. But that had nothing to do with the two above factors.

If that had never happened the movie was still going to be changed from his original vision. That happens all the time. The question is how much he would have been willing to work with the studio who was paying for all this.

One thing is also clear - WB regardless of their opinions of Snyder’s work handled the transition to another director badly. As often the case, the cast and crew had a loyalty to the director they had worked with for a long time. They should have been treated better. But make no mistake - this is Show BUSINESS. It’s about making the best product that makes the most money. Which is to the benefit of everyone. Financially but also their future career options. There needed to be real diplomacy on set to finish the film. Whether it was overseen by Snyder or someone else. Clearly Joss Whedon was not suited for that. Also does not help that the studio green lighted a certain style of film and had buyers remorse later.

Personally I think it would have been the best for everyone if they just hired a very skilled editor to release a version at about 2 and half hours long. With no extensive reshoots. If the film failed at the box office at least the studio would have committed to some version of what they had agreed to do. Would not have alienated the cast in the process. Than maybe at some point Snyder later would have released an extended director’s cut when he was ready after morning. It would likely have been a non event.

Which is really what is going on here now. A lot of individuals trying to spin every insignificant event to a huge drama to serve their own self interests.

Successful except for the part that apparently it was the least watched blockbuster of the year on HBO, and a majority of people that started it didn't finish it...

Snyder admitted that the plan all along was to cut to 2.5 hours. I don't think a full 4 hour cut was ever going to be released...

Haha. No. Watching it once was 4 hours of my life that I'll never get back. The only thing watching it convinced me of was that the studio made the right decision. However, in the end, no filmmaker could have saved that pile of crap.

The Snyder Cut is a significant improvement over the Whedonized version. About the only thing I miss from the Whedon version is some of the specific jokes, and a little better editing in one place. Whedon's just funnier than Snyder et al. (Which is not to say Snyder is completely unfunny; this Flash is constructed as a comedy character in either version.)

Like I miss the Dostoevsky bit but that's the conclusion of the whole Russian family thing, which isn't missed. Whedon always does this thing where he insists on spending time showing the effects of the chaos on regular people, and that's nice in theory, but it was already getting a little old by Ultron, and in JL it begins to grate.

Snyder has said that the four hour movie was done because WB gave him the go ahead to make the movie he had "originally" wanted to do--so free from studio limitations and bound only by what he was able to reshoot/rework he made the four hour version.

I thought I liked the theatrical JL, but Snyder Cut made me realize that they pretty much butchered it. It didn't flow with the movies before it at ALL. Like I said - the mistake was hiring Snyder in the first place, but once they did they should have stuck to it at least until the end of his JL saga...

I mean, to each their own, I guess. I thought that the Snyder Cut was inferior in literally every way, and again I don't think the theatrical cut was a "good" movie, but at least it had color and a bit of joy and hope and Superman actually almost felt like Superman. Sure, there are definitely some things that could have been cut (like the Flash/WW "joke"), but nothing in the Snyder Cut is better. Even if the Snyder Cut was trimmed down to a non-bullshit length, it would still be inferior. Worse characters, worse villain, worse writing, MUCH worse pacing, etc. Its the much worse version of a movie that started at mediocre, at least in my opinion. I'll probably rewatch the theatrical JL cut every few years, in a "bad movie but with a few decent elements" kind of way, but I will never watch a second of the Snyder Cut ever again.

It's all about the bright colors with you. But the Snyder cut was colorful enough... just not bright red when it didn't need to be.

Worse villain? What? Are you kidding?

One thing that was much better in Snyder's version: the music. Though it was a bit on the sentimental side...

Three guesses who wrote the following and you probably won't need more than one of them...

"Exclusive: Waning reporter fails to overshadow digital release of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ with contrived hit piece—Warner Bros. mourns."

And at this point I think everyone agrees that he was let go, and allowed to use his daughter's suicide as cover?
I really it wasn't because that is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard in my life. It would make Zack Snyder not only a horrible parent, but an absolutely disgusting human being in general. The thought of using something like that as "cover" is just downright horrific.

Apparently in the TV series The Bear, a character refers at one point to "incel-QAnon-4chan-Snyder-Cut motherfuckers." Have to admit I LOLed when I read that.

Things that were better in Snyder Cut
1) Amazons battle
2) SteppenWolf's look and motivations
3) Darkseid obviously
4) Many stupid jokes cut (though I miss Superman's "do you bleed")
5) Cyborg, since he was totally irrelevant in theatrical
6) Wonder Woman actually in character
7) Music

Some things were worse.
1) Completely unnecessary Martian Manhunter addition
2) Flow of the movie was horrible (probably would have been improved in 2.5 hour cut)
3) Runtime obviously
4) Too Snydery - colors, slow motion, etc...
5) Superman phone footage not there.

Overall, I am glad we got Snyder Cut in both an academic way (was wondering what Snyder had planned, now we know) and as entertainment.

Well, I think he was going to take a long break after the movie anyway (because of the suicide), so it wasn't much of a cover... but it does seem like WB was all too happy to let him walk.

Snyder fandom IS a full on cult, and its really weird. Which sucks because I like his movies, but don't want to be associated with them at all! lol
