DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

Can't wait! And here I thought I wouldn't be watching a Batman movie this year (so not interested in what Matt Reeves is doing). Batman comics that I collect have pretty much finished as well, I think I'm just over the character and his world in general at this point.

But Flash and Black Adam have really got me excited for the future of DC movies.

That's the thing... On the one hand, I feel I should be very interested in what Matt Reeves is doing, since he did such a great job with the Planet of the Apes sequels. But on the other hand, a lot of what I'm seeing about his approach to Batman doesn't appeal to me at all -- I like the detective angle, but all the dark, angsty, violent, morally ambiguous stuff seems like taking Batman even further in the direction I think it's high time to pull him back from onscreen. So I don't know how I feel about the film. I like the filmmaker but I don't think I like his ideas in this case. But maybe his take on the ideas will still be good. I just don't know.

You said it better than I could have. When it was first revealed they'd finally focus on the "detective" part of Dark Knight Detective, I was really looking forward to that. Plus, like you also said, the pedigree from Plant of the Apes. But then when I saw that the trailer revealed it was basically a Se7en sequel, I said "Well, not for me."

I'll still probably see the film once the library gets the DVD; I just don't know how much I'll like it. I mean, I borrowed The Suicide Squad despite the violence, and there were aspects of it I appreciated even though a lot of it was not my cup of tea. Heck, I even borrowed the Snyder Cut, which I found to be two hours of a generally decent movie bracketed by two hours of pointless self-indulgent excess. So I'm hoping there will be things to like about The Batman even though it's not the approach I was hoping for.

Really, the only DC live-action movie to date I haven't bothered to watch and have no intention of watching is Joker.

We are getting a lot of Batman this year, The Batman next month, The Flash in November and I think Batgirl is rumored for December this year? That's pretty intense.

Just like their comics, too much bat.
They really don't seem to have faith in any other character that's not him or part of his "family".

Here's a question that just occurred to me, though:

If Batman aged gracefully, would that mean he had a stately wane manner?

I've been kind of hoping for a lighter take on Batman, but I am loving everything I'm seeing from The Batman so far.
I do find it a little funny that a lot of people seem to be more excited for The Batmen's role in The Flash, than they are in the actual Batman movie coming out next week.
I think Batman is one of the few superheroes, where this kind of a take actually works.
A few of the comments I've seen have kind of given me the impression that he starts to move away from the anger and violence as the movie goes on.

The clips haven't looked as dark and broody to me as the buildup has suggested.

I’m curious to see The Batman, but holy-moly, almost 3 hours for a first movie in the series…
I swear everything I've been in interested in recently is well over two hours, often two and thirty. Though I'm not sure if I'm up to three in the theater.

The trailers suggest a stylized sense of fantasy that was missing from Nolan's "realistic" approach. Fundamentally, Batman is as absurd as any other superhero, which is why Tim Burton's gothic funhouse movies were by far the best cinematic take on the character to date.

Just looks like another Nolan take. Not really a take I’m a fan of. I prefer a more comic accurate version.

Snyder, Burton and Nolan were inspired by The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke, which both came out in the 80s. Reeves is drawing inspiration from The Long Halloween (late 90s), which is one of my favorite batman stories next to TDKR as well as Year One(also an influence for Nolan). There is a reason filmakers keep going back to those stories as they are more in line with how the character was originally envisioned. I don't EVER want Batman to go back to the Schumacher days or that silly 60s series. We already have The Flash for more lighthearted fare and Shazaam if you like just plain silly. Keep Batman the way he should be: dark, brooding and living in a world that is total crime and chaos.
