DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

First Batgirl now this. Are they planning on dumping all their non-Wonder Woman female-led movies to streaming?

Not the most developed or interesting character from the DC roster (at least until the Bronze Age of comics), and considering the comic version's longtime relationship with Green Arrow, one wonders if he will make his debut in this production.

I only know Green Arrow from the tv show, but I always enjoyed that character. I wouldn't seeing what the DCEU could with the character.

Honestly? As long as extra charges aren't stupid high like Disney seems to do (especially knowing that three months later you can watch it for free) I don't mind a lot more movies to come out on streaming. And I know a lot of people like me. Going to the theaters has become stupid expensive. Plus that the whole 'experience' isn't there for me anymore. Maybe I'm old.
But I've got craftbeer that's cheaper than the macropiss they sell for 5 bucks a pint at the theater, and snacks I actually really enjoy. A comfortable couch I can lie down on, in my sweatpants and fave hoody. Hell yeah, gimme streaming anyday.

I'm a big fan of Black Canary in the comics (mostly from Gail Simone making her awesome in Simone's two Birds of Prey runs), but I didn't find the film version compelling. None of the supporting cast were particularly good in the BoP movie, and what little film BC took from the comics was from the horrible Rebirth version (it was moronic to turn a badass martial artist into a damn singer for literally no other reason except an idiotic comic writer thinks that Canary = singing).

So, I'd definitely pass on a film with this version of Black Canary. She wasn't nearly as infuriating as the fake "Cassandra Cain" from that film (who literally didn't resemble the comic version in anything but being an asian woman), but she had nothing that makes me want to see more of her, especially in a leading role.

I didn't know that's where the singing came from.

I dig where you're coming from. I would LOVE to see a good adaptation of BoP from Gail's era. And yeah, there was no reason to give that character Cassandra's name. But I'm still willing to give it a chance. YMMV :)

To be fair, the singing makes sense as a justification for why she's called "Canary." I think the original reason for the character's name was that she was initially depicted (in the Johnny Thunder backup stories in Flash Comics) as a crimefighter who pretended to be a criminal in order to infiltrate criminal organizations and expose or stymie them -- so she was a "canary" in the sense of a snitch, though it was probably also in reference to her blond wig. But I don't think that slang is used anymore, and modern portrayals give her a different origin. So it's reasonable to come up with a different origin for the name.

I always wondered where the Canary in her name came from.
I don’t think we can rule anything out so far as WB/DC is concerned. It really brings to mind William Goldman’s quote “in Hollywood, nobody knows anything.” If you’d told me in 2019 that the Snyder cut would get made, that not only would Affleck return as Batman but so would Keaton in the same damn film, that the TV DC would feature the filmic Flash and both Brandon Routh and Tom Welling as Superman/Clark Kent, that Jared Leto would be back as The Joker, etc, I would’ve asked what you were smoking. So at this stage, anything is possible!
OK that is a fair, I didn't think about how much surprising stuff they've done. Hell, if you told me Keaton was coming back before we got confirmation, I never would have believed you.
Keaton sounds pretty enthusiastic about The Flash (and frankly, reading this, so am I!): https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/mi...ISY9LS-dFIBpwgcxSmMFEyz6fqscJ9tx9SZKizPy4cakw
Yeah, it is comforting to see he's so positive.
Cool, I really liked her in the movie.
I'm a big Black Canary fan from way back, and Jurnee is a terrific actor. I hope we can get a good script!
It had some issues, but overall I was pretty happy with what Misha Green did with Lovecraft Country, so I'm confident she'll be able deliver with Black Canary.

I don't think it's that they are women, so much as them not being the big names like Superman, Batman, the Fash, ect.

I had always thought it was weird that she had Canary in her name and voice based powers and wasn't a singer, so my first thought when I heard she was a singer now was that they fixed a long time mistake.

Yeah, as much as I love the movie, I have to admit making the girl Cassandra Caine was an odd choice. I was thinking earlier that Harper Rowe might have been a better choice.

Eh. I think Batgirl is a reasonably big name overall. Nothing is guaranteed and this is obviously speculative by definition, but I wouldn't be even slightly shocked to see a Batgirl movie outperform a Superman movie at this point.

Plus, if the Flash were such a reliable big name by himself the studio wouldn't have needed the security blanket of having *two* Batmen in his movie to finally get that project moving forward.

And I wouldn't forget, either, the fact that big name status is generally a lot less reliable as a litmus test for success than people generally believe. The list of billion dollar plus characters currently includes *Aquaman* and a *Joker solo film*. But not Wonder Woman or Superman. Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther and Captain Marvel all crossed that threshold before Spider-man, too. And Wolverine hasn't got there yet, either.

I only know Green Arrow from the tv show, but I always enjoyed that character. I wouldn't seeing what the DCEU could with the character.

I'm almost certain a DCEU Green Arrow would go for the grittier interpretation of the character that emerged from the late 60s and into the next decade from the pen of writers such as Bob Haney and Deny O'Neil. That was GA at his best, and would fit in perfectly with the DCEU.

I will have to take your word on that. I've been stating this in other comicbookmovie topics, but except for niche stores, comicbooks form the USA have never really been huge here, except for things like Batman, Spiderman, X-Men.
Green Arrow comics are an unknown really.

To average moviegoers? Not so much.

One might say the same about Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Stark (and Parker's desire to prove himself in the wake of Civil War) was the anchor of the film, when that should not have been needed in a film starring Marvel's flagship character, one who--in this century--had two movie series of his own, which is an acknowledgement of that flagship status.

Ooh, wouldn't it be cool to have a modern take on the O'Neil/Adams "Hard Traveling Heroes"?

I know it's unlikely, but I can dream.

I had always thought it was weird that she had Canary in her name and voice based powers and wasn't a singer, so my first thought when I heard she was a singer now was that they fixed a long time mistake.

The thing is, it just doesn't fit her personality as its been since the second version of Black Canary (aka the daughter of the original BC) was created. At her best, Black Canary is one of the top Martial Artists in the DC Universe, a match for Shiva, and just generally a bad ass. Her backstory with her mother (the original BC) had the OG BC wanting her to be more "normal" and trying to keep her away from superheroes but the 2nd BC just loves fighting even as a kid and, after training with Wildcat, goes out to kick bad guy ass. Outside of enjoying flowers enough to sometimes run a flower shop as her civilian job, Black Canary mostly focuses on being a fighter/superhero.

Being a singer is almost hilariously out of character for Black Canary. Her name and sonic powers were never linked to singing, its just a coincidence. It was just a horrible DC writer during Rebirth that put them together. As someone who has read a lot of comics with Black Canary (she was in the entire first and second runs of Birds of Prey, which is easily over 100 issues from multiple writers, along with her time in the Johns JSA, the Green Arrow/Black Canary series and even the old Green Arrow/Green Lantern series appearances), her as a singer is probably the least likely thing that Black Canary would ever do.

This is obviously not something that the Harley Quinn movie invented, but it sucks that Black Canary has been ruined by a few shitty comic writers. At least the fake Cassandra Cain was 100% the movie writer's fault and definitely won't effect the comic character, Black Canary is probably permanently ruined. The singer thing is just one of those changes that you can tell will ruin a character permanently, which is rare in the Big 2 (because most things get retconned back to a status quo) but does occasionally happen (like Spider-Man being ruined by OMD, Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver not being mutants because Ike Perlmutter is a prick, Oracle being unparalyzed, etc).

Momoa has posted a pic of Aquaman’s new costume from the sequel https://www.instagram.com/p/CTciXzACzGA/?utm_medium=copy_link
Nice! It reminds a teeny bit of my favorite alternative version of his suit.

Hilarious that DC is having an easier time putting out an Aquaman sequel and still no MoS 2...
