DC Comics: Rebirth

Further post-Future State announcements:

Writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Dan Mora take over Detective Comics with #1034.

Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist artist Ivan Reis take over Batman/Superman with #16.

Harley Quinn gets a relaunch starting with #1, with writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Riley Rossmo.

The only one of those writers I've heard of is Mariko Tamaki, she destroyed She-Hulk with her shitty Grey PTSD-Hulk run, which lead to She-Hulk being a dumb brute in Aaron's terrible Avengers run, so even if I had any interest in a modern Dc Batman book I'd stay far away from that one. I don't know the other people, but post-2011 Harley Quinn is just a shitty female version of Deadpool so thats always a no from me, and just anything with Superman or Batman is unreadable at this point thanks to Bendis and Tom King ruining those characters.

Okay, Geoff Thorne apparently HATES Hal Jordan, so his GL book launching in March will star John Stewart.

While I don't hate Hal Jordan, I have to say John is my favorite GL as well, so I'm really good with the new book focusing on him.

That is awesome. I am so fucking sick of Hal Jordan, I'd even take a Kyle Rayner book at this point, so getting a John Stewart book is great. I'd honestly prefer to see jessica Cruz get a book again after hers got cancelled for Grant Morrison's shitty vanity project, but even without knowing the writer's work I am definitely interested in a John Stewart lead book.

IGN's article about the new books also includes the first issues' cover art.
Who are those other characters with John Stewart on the New Green Lantern cover?
The Batman costume on the Detective Comics cover is interesting. The cowl there is more of a helmet, and it looks like he's got a armored vest with the bat symbol painted on it. It's almost got a bit of rough, home made kind of look to it.
I'm really surprised we don't see Harley Quinn or Deadshot in The Suicide Squad, they've been pretty consistent members since the New 52. It's pretty clear the prominence of Peacemaker is thanks to the movie. I'm getting the impression they are expecting him to be the breakout character for the movie.
Is the blue and pink hair on Harley new? I've only seen her with red and blond or red and white.

Actually, several of those aren't the covers for the March issues, but from the Future State event. The GL and Detective ones are among those. Can't say who those other characters on that GL cover are, I presume they're ones introduced in FS, but I might be mistaken.

Deadshot was recently killed off in the current Suicide Squad book, and Harley left the team.

Edit: The Batman cover on that IGN list is from #102, which is already out!

OK, thanks. I've heard of them, but didn't recognize them.

Oh, sorry about the confusion. I just thought since they had them paired up with the new books, they were their covers.

Oh, I hadn't heard about that.

Weird.

You don't need to be sorry, IGN made this weird choice.

After Geoff Thorne got some backlash from Hal Jordan fans over his tweets over the years, he has responded by pointing out the difference of speaking as a fan and working as a writer.

The funny thing is, some DC people don't really have a difference. Dan Didio did have a vendetta against fictional characters, and did his best to get rid of characters like Nightwing and Wally West his entire time as head honcho, only stopped because even comics sometimes have to respond to fan backlash.

As for Thorne, as someone who would love to never read a story with Hal Jordan again I think the people whining are ridiculous. Hal Jordan has been shoved down everyone's throats since he was brought back, and all the other GL books even got cancelled so that Grant Morrison's vanity project starring Hal jordan had no competition. So, in my opinion the few Hal jordan fans can suck it up and deal with not having the blandest white dude in DC comics be the star attraction of the Green Lantern line for a bit, which is something fans of the other GLs (like me) have had to deal with for years. Jordan will be back as the #1 Lantern probably way too soon anyway, you can't keep a bland, boring character down if geoff Johns loves them :shifty:

Some more new books come March:

- A Crime Syndicate mini-series by writer Andy Schmidt and artist Kieran McKeown

- Catwoman picks up where it left of with #29 by the usual team of Ram V, Fernando Blanco, Joëlle Jones and Jenny Frison

- New Joker ongoing series by James Tynion IV and Guillem March, with Punchline as a back-up feature

- "Batman: Urban Legends" 64-page monthly anthology series, featuring the allies and/or side-characters of the Baman universe, first issue features the first chapter in a six-part Red Hood story by Chip Zdarsky & Eddy Barrows, a Grifter feature by Matthew Rosenberg & Ryan Benjamin, a Harley Quinn prologue to her new ongoing book by Stephanie Phillips with art by Laura Braga, and part 1 of 3 of a new Outsiders (Black Lightning, Katana & Metamorpho) story by Brandon Thomas & Max Dunbar

- "Superman: Red and Blue" six-issue anthology mini-series in the vein of Batman: Black & White, with the first issue featuring stories by John Ridley & Claiton Henry, writer/artist Wes Craig, Marguerite Bennett & Jill Thompson, and Dan Watters & Dani

Crime Syndicate, Catwoman and Joker are hard passes for me. That Outsiders feature might get me into the Urban Legends book, though I have little to no interest in the other features. Red & Blue is a sure buy.

Yeah, Superman: Red & Blue is a likely buy for me.

In other news, Phillip Kennedy Johnson is taking over writing duties on both Action and Superman with Bendis’s departure:

Johnson’s an unknown quantity for me, but he definitely says the right things:
My North Star when writing Superman, the thing that I always try to remember, is that his powers are not the point. They should serve to illustrate how utterly selfless and incorruptible he is. Superman is the figure of absolute power who wields it with absolute compassion and humility. He’s the man with the power to conquer the universe who would lay down his life for the least of us.

For me, that was embodied perfectly by Christopher Reeve’s depiction in Superman: The Movie, and that’s still the voice I hear in my mind, even in the context of giant space epics and intergalactic revolutions. In 2020, people need to believe that such people can and should exist, and that Truth and Justice are still ideas that deeply matter. I want everyone to see the Superman that I see, to believe in him and to aspire to be him.

Since he's writing both books does that mean it'll basically be one book released twice a month under two different titles?

DC's article announcing the new Superman team includes some more details about the books, including descriptions of the plots for the first two issues.
Both series will feature a new series of backup stories, Tales of Metropolis, which feature different writer/artists teams telling stories about supporting characters.
The article also says that Johnson is going to be doing a "special Superman project" with Worlds of War artist Mikel Janin which is "still to be announced".
Here's DC's announcements for Superman: Red & Blue, Crime Syndicate, and the new 80th Anniversary weekly digital Wonder Woman anthology, Sensational Wonder Woman.

I hadn't read the Hollywood Reporter interview with Johnson in full when I posted earlier, but now that I have, I'm a bit concerned over how little interest he seems to have in Lois (as in, he doesn't mention her once). One thing I really appreciated about Bendis was how he front-and-centered her, emphasizing her investigative skills in Event Leviathan, and tagging her "the most dangerous woman in the DC Universe." Johnson seriously needs not to treat her as an afterthought or also-ran. She's properly Superman's co-star (or he, hers).

I find it interesting that The Hollywood Reporter ( and other Entertainment magazines) have articles about who's writing a comic book. In my youth that never happened.

I am wondering if we will ever get the follow up to Event Leviathan. I am also wondering what Bendis is going to be writing beyond LSH?

I haven't followed it closely, so I'm not sure if it's confirmed or just rumored, but I've heard Bendis will be writing the Justice League.

ETA: This would appear to be confirmed. Just ran across this:
