You guys all read this week's Deathstroke (#11), right? Christopher Priest takes on America gun violence, as Deathstroke takes a detour to Chiraq. This issue both managed to make the Creeper (yes, the Creeper) cool, and serve as a wonderful exploration of the gun violence epidemic confronting America. It's handled in a decidedly un-After School Special way, and Priest makes clear he has no answers, but it's mature, it's nuanced, and it's just generally well done. Maybe the best single issue of a comic that I've read in years, and I'm not afraid to say it.
Also, Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz on art duties. That's the kind of duo you just can't beat. And it's all capped off by a great Magnificent Bastard moment for Slade, which really sums up the character in a handful of words. Great stuff here, folks!

Uh, ... has the Vigilante mini-series been cancelled half-way through?! Because my online comics dealer lists #4 in my subscription box under "initial cancellations" and taken the title itself off my subscription list.
This isn't about DC rebirth, but its about a DC comic in general so I'll post here, because I just need to get this out.
I just finished my Legion of Superheroes Volume 5 DC Showcase volume. It is easily the most miserably bad Legion stories I've ever read. Most of the book is made up of issues of the "Superboy starring the Legion of Superheros" comic, with the exception of a Karate Kid one-shot (which was one of the only good stories). The stories were published between 1973-1976. The problems with this book are massive. For one thing, this volume reprinted possibly the worst single issue of a Legion comics (and almost certainly the most racist), the introduction of Tyroc. It boggles the mind that this got published, even in 1976 they had to know this was both moronic and offensive. This is the same book where the artist, Mike Grell, was basically not allowed to make any characters black because the editor wanted to "save" the first black character, and they ended up with Tyroc. The issue itself also is just a garbage story forgetting the stuff about Tyroc and his island home (its where every single human of African decent moved to, which is why none exist in the outside world of the future
). So, yeah, that happened.
But, that was just one event, the real problem that ruins the majority of the volume is the horrible treatment of the female Legionaires. Most of this book's stories were written by Cary Bates and Jim Shooter, and somehow they make, for example, Stan Lee at his worst look like an amazing writer of female heroes (I like Stan and his work but, especially right when Marvel got big, his writing of female heroes was pretty crap, although he got better as time went on). I have the first two DC Showcase volumes of LoSH, and I can tell you the treatment of the female Legionaires in volume 5 has majorly devolved, even from the stories written in the late 50s/early sixties (which were fun silver age stories). Basically, the female legionaires in this volume are mildly competent support at best, but usually either ineffective damsels in distress, background eye candy (with redesigned "sexy" costumes that are mostly terrible, since I think they decided the female legionaires were old enough to turn into just blatant eye candy), or getting berated and treated badly by the male legionaires. Light Lass even gets a backhand from Cosmic Boy for making a legitimate argument about something. Cosmic Boy actually got another terrible moment in this volume, when he breaks up with Night Lass because he's pissed that she wants to save people at night (when her powers are most effective) and doesn't spend enough time going on dates with him. Of course, in the end she can't beat up the bad guy so Cosmic Boy comes in, saves the day, and "forgives" her
This whole book just blew my mind in the worst way. Don't get me wrong, I expect some messed up stuff reading old comics, things that are stupid and would generally not be done by any competent writer nowadays. But, its almost every story in the book, and like I said the late 50s and 60s stories didn't do this stuff to anywhere near this extent. I think the writers have to take most of the blame for this, with some probably given to the editor because, based off the Tyroc stuff, he was obviously a bit of a nut. Once or twice a female legionnaire got to be the hero of the story, but most of the 500 pages of this volume had the female heros make early Wasp in Avengers almost look like Gail Simone's Wonder Woman when it comes to a quality portrayal of female heroes in comparison.
The one good thing I can say about this volume is that Mike Grell, who drew a majority of the stories, is a good artist. Besides that, its a mostly bad book that somehow got problems with portraying its female heroes that Legion stories didn't have as badly 15 - almost 20 years before. The Legion would eventually recover from this (I've read some of Paul Levitz run which is great, and doesn't really have these problems), but the era that is collected in this volume is so garbage I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it. Maybe people who like the Legion just try to suppress the memories.

Just read the JLA Rebirth issue.
So Batman's thing since Rebirth is to form teams that have at least one reformed villain, first Clayface on Detective Comics, and now Killer Frost on JLA. I wonder how much that decision was influenced by TV's Caitlin Snow.
The issue itself was a pretty standard team recruitment sequence, but the teases at the end were interesting. Couple of weird things though... Batman kept talking about the need to from a team of humans, where's that coming from? Also... humans, and then he recruits Lobo?

That's hilarious, and exactly what the fake Lobo deserves.
In a flashback story in the latest issue of Detective, Tim confronts Bruce about what he's doing and why he's preparing for a war. This, of course, is set before Tim apparently died. It makes you wonder -- what is Bruce preparing for? How much about Mr. Oz does he already know?
Yeah, just read that. One hell of a tease and a really good issue in itself.
Loved the Cass part. Not enough Kate though, I hope her getting a standalone won't diminish her role in Detective.

Super Sons #1 was pretty much everything I wanted in a comic book.
Oh, I have little quibbles -- how does Damian get back and forth to Hamilton so easily (it's 300 miles from Metropolis to Hamilton, to say nothing of the distance from Gotham to Metropolis) -- but they're little things compared to the charm of Damian stalking Jon because he wants a friend.

I just have to say, the last 2 issues of Batman, the "I Am Bane" start, were absolute homeruns for me. Considering I almost dropped the title a bit ago, I'm glad I didn't, King finally hit his stride for me. Hope he keeps this momentum going!
