DC Comics: Rebirth

Ah, nothing I need to worry about then. I'll read the new issues as they happen and may check out a few 'past events' as they are referenced.

I'm 30 years adrift continuity wise - I may well ask the occasional dumb question here. I understand there's other coloured lanterns thesedays...
Where once there were 3, now there are 9.

Christmas 1971 was a while back, but yeah sure, there are coloured Lanterns now.

(Edit)

On a serious note, so many Nerds, have made so many endless Youtube tutorials about every feature in comic book history you could even wonder the relevance there of. Watching a bald spot fight a neckbeard for 12 minutes is almost easier than reading 15 years worth of Animal Man continuity.

He'll probably wear his Vietnam War era shorts.
I thought I remembered seeing images of him in shorts, but I couldn't remember for sure. My only experience with Watchmen is the movie, but only saw it once when it was in theaters and I don't really remember it.
EDIT: Tor.com's Alasdair Stuart has an article up about Rebirth and Captain America #1, and the reactions to them. He brings up an interesting point about how this is apparently all going to relate to Watchmen. It sounds to me like it could be kind of an interesting look at the lighter vs the darker sides of comics.
If this does in fact all lead to a lighter, more optimistic version of the DCU, it will be interesting to see if it actually lasts, or if we still end up back in a grim and gritty world in a few years.

I'm wondering if Johns has specifically announced that this represents the return of the Watchmen. I know we have the smily face and the watch imagery, but there is already an established version of Dr. Manhattan in the current multiverse--on Earth 4.

That's Captain Atom. The character Doctor Manhattan was based on.

It's Morrison's version of Captain Atom. In Multiversity, the Charlton characters are presented as if Moore's original proposal for the Watchmen had been accepted but updated to a contemporary setting.

Which doesn't make much sense given that the end of Watchmen relies on Dr. Manhattan regaining a sense of awe.

Yes, but its still not Doctor Manhattan. They obviously want to use the Watchmen versions rather than the Chalton or Morrison version. I doubt it would mean as much to use the Multivesity Captain Atom.

O.K., I'm now reading Before Watchmen, Sinestro War and Blackest Night. That's it. Then back to my ongoing Marvel catch up, apart from the new DC Rebirth stuff...

What titles are you guys thinking of picking up?

Titles I'm most interested in are:

Titans - The Fab Five plus extras.

Teen Titans - Damian and other Dick Grayson hand-me downs.

Action Comics - Lex Luthor Man of Steel

Green Lantern - Jessica Cruz + Simon Baz

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps - Hal Jordan and the GL Corps

Cyborg - Victory!

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey - Trinity!

Blue Beetle - Jamie and Ted plz

Detective Comics - Batman and Batwoman lead a team with Tim, Stephanie and Cassandra.

I'm a little concerned at seeing all the same creative teams from before... just with some minor chair shuffling.

I just went into it assuming Mark Millar, Jonathan Hickman, Scott Snyder, and Geoff Johns would be writing every title

Well, that would have made me run for the hills and not even glance at Rebirth, so I'm glad they didn't go that route  Seriously though, Hickman has never worked for DC and I hope he doesn't start, and Mark Millar has done barely anything for DC since the very early 2000s, and I definitely won't miss him. DC does need some shake ups creatively and needs different writers, but they drove away a lot of the good people by their terrible editorial practices. There doesn't seem to be many writers that have much of a name that aren't already working for DC that would be willing to work for them. I'd love to see some of the long time Marvel people like Peter David get a shot at some characters, or see DC let Gail Simone really go at a major character/team without them putting stupid/restrictive editorial stuff on her books. Heck, as long as I'm dreaming maybe they could get Mark Waid back and give him Superman or JLA.

But, I'm going to give Rebirth a chance even without a huge amount of new writers. From what I've read, DC editorial was a big part of the dark/boring tone (Gail Simone tweeted about DC editors immediately rejecting lighter stories when she was on Batgirl, for example). So, if DC will start letting writers have a bit more room to be creative, there will probably be some cool stuff and an overall improvement even with a lot of the same writers.

I'm planning on sticking with the Batfamily books for at least five issues, so:

Batman, Nightwing, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Batgirl. I have to pick up Detective Comics for sure now, since my faves Tim and Cass are in it; I just hope they give Tim more to do, and restore his Robin legacy.

I really am iffy on Damien, so I might just check out the reviews for Teen Titans first, and I might give Blue Beetle a whirl.

I wish Peter David could write some DC. He wrote some of my fave Marvel runs (X-Factor investigations would be great for a tv adaption) and unlike most DC books I've read lately, he includes humor and great introspective character stuff. Two bad Gail Simone isn't doing anything here, her Batgirl stuff was excellent.

Eh, I actually hated Simone's Batgirl, but she did a lot of good stuff pre-reboot (like Birds of Prey and Secret Six), and her New 52 Secret Six, while not as good as the pre-reboot version, was interesting. Her non-DC stuff is also pretty good. It seems like she got a lot of editorial garbage while writing stuff like Batgirl, so I'd be interested in seeing her get to write a DC comic where she's let loose a bit more, like the pre-New 52 era.

Superman II (either Kon-El or Lar-Zod)

I hadn't even considered Lar-Zod/Chris Kent and what his status quo is post-Rebirth. Perhaps he's still in the Phantom Zone and remembers the pre-Flashpoint universe.

I believe he's still Marvel exclusive.

So I finally got around to reading the final three issues of Grayson. I had been wondering why Dick Grayson would go back to being Nightwing and what he would do without a secret identity, but the final issues answered those questions.
