DC Comics: Rebirth

The solicits for June have been released. Couple of notes:

- No "Generation" one-shot. "Generation One" is announced for May 27. Might be that "Generation Two" is just pushed back one week, which would mean a release on July 1. But it could mean a first major shift in direction after the departure of Dan Didio.

- "Three Jokers" finally coming out. And after only four years.

- Joker also absolutely dominating all Bat-Family titles. And the synopsis for Detective #1024 seems to spoil a twist in the story arc that just started in February's issue.

- Mariko Tamaki takes over as writer of Wonder Woman.

- "Batman: The Adventure Continues" #2 brings in Deathstroke. Am I mistaken in thinking this to be his DCAU debut?

- "Batman & the Outsiders" is going on #14, and still fighting Ra's al Ghul. I really like the characters, but I'm so ready for this arc to be over.

- Shirtless Batman on the cover of "Batman/Superman".

- The Flash fights the Tornado Twins?!

- JL brings in another new writer for what can be assumed to be another filler 3-part story.

- Dan Didio's "Metal Men" still going on.

- SHAZAM! by different creative team. Filler?

- Cover for "The Terrifics" looks incharacteristically dark.

- "Wonder Woman 1984 Giant" coming as a tie-in to the movie. New story co-written by Louise Simonson.

- Couple of interesting HC and SC collections, including Superboy's very own "75th Anniversary" hardcover.

Was the original Teen Titans animated series part of the DCAU? I believe he was one of the main villains on that.

No, it overlapped with a few seasons of the Justice League series, it was not part of the same universe. For example, Dick is the Robin on that team, while the DCAU Dick had been Nightwing for a few years by that point.

Edit: Just checked Wikipedia, and it does seem like Deathstroke has indeed not appeared in the DCAU before.

Looks pretty good.

Oh great, the woman who absolutely destroyed She-Hulk is taking over Wonder Women. Well, that's an automatic drop for me, which is fine since honestly Wonder Woman's book hasn't been all that great recently anyway, so this just gives me more of a reason to stop reading it.

Wow, I have never heard of that before, seeing it on screen would be hilarious.
That seems like the kind of thing Legends of Tomorrow would do.

Well this is just ...I don't know how to even describe it... Tamaki is such a fresh, creative presence in comics today. She takes her work very clearly and does an amazing job of writing female characters as rich, multifaceted, and strong WOMEN. Her perspective, like Gail Simone's is much different than a man's perspective and the world of comics is richer for it. Some men may not like her take because it is no longer a man's take on long-beloved characters. I didn't read She-Hulk but her Supergirl mini-series was one of the best I've read in a while--not for the story so much as the depth she brought to the character who felt like a real teenage girl. It is a shame that Tamaki is not taking over the Supergirl series instead.

Deciding something is crap sight unseen? Must be a day ending with a “y”.

It's every DC comic published from 1935 to 2014. Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27 alone make the collection worth millions.

I'm am getting caught up in my reading. Just finished the Justice Doom War which ends on a cliffhanger and then JL 40 seems to take place prior to the current story line with Eradicator. It appears that JL Odyssey however takes a different approach but I haven't got there yet. So the current Justice Doom story is continued in Death Metal it seems--but is this leading to a Reboot of the multiverse and, if so, does Doomsday Clock fit into continuity at all?

I hope not - I've only just used Convergence as a jumping on point for DC (Superman titles mainly) and thought I was reboot proof for a while...

Well, the importance of Death Metal seems to have been heightened after Dan Didio left DC. On the other hand, Didio was very resistent to Rebirth, trying to push the direction of the New 52. He especially didn't like legacy characters like Wally West and Dick Grayson (which really showed, but he recently acknowledged it in an interview), and since Rebirth was all about bringing the legacy theme back into the DC Universe, he used his position to really reign it in (see Wally in "Heroes in Crisis", and the whole Ric Grayson desaster, for examples).

One of the things that changed about Death Metal after Didio left was that Wally's role grew much more important. And the whole G5 thing seems to have been scrapped completely, so whatever was going on there, some of the loose threads from that project (one being omnipowerful Wally, obviously) will be addressed in Death Metal.

I was actually going to sit Death Metal out, but these recent developments have persuaded me to follow it.

Thanks for that. Didio has never been that quiet about is disdain for Wally and Dick--he's tried to have them killed off/retired before. As for 5G, DC was already in a good place with a new generation of legacy characters slowly taking over prior to New52--which made the whole 5G idea a poorly established one in my mind. I did pick up the first issue of Death Metal and will probably need to continue buying.

In the meantime it looks like we are stuck in a bit of a comic continuity limbo until 2021.
