DC Comics Ongoing Discussion

DARK CRISIS will come with 30 side issues filling in the backstory.

On a different topic:
I don't know if anyone follows the Legion of Super-Heroes. But I recently bought the Silver Age Omnibus V. 1 with the intention of getting volumes 2 and 3. I just discovered that these volumes stop at the end of the Legion's backup story run in Action Comics (late 60s or early 70s).

The next collected edition is Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes V. 1 which doesn't start until Superboy and the Legion 234 (or close to that). That leaves a significant gap of Legion back up stories in Superboy, and early issues of Superboy starring the Legion. Also the collected editions of Superboy and the LSH don't seem to have appearances of the Legion in other comics like the JLA.

I have 2 questions:

Is there a planned Bronze Age Omnibus series?
If not, what is the best way to fill the gap? The Archive series?

Oh wow, another DC event I will completely ignore. Is it that time of the month again? I wonder if it will involve pushing shitty characters like fake Wonder Girl and shitty rip off of Young Justice Aquaman to the front, only to put them away again when people get fed up and want the actual Aquaman, Wonder Woman, etc back. As much as I love Infinite Crisis, I'd erase it from existence in a second if it meant DC couldn't keep ruining it with an infuriating amount of rip off events.

As long as The Flash comic, which is currently starring Wally West, is left alone, I don't give a crap how badly DC continues to destroy its characters at this point. If this event screws with The Flash, then I'll have to drop the last DC book that I'm reading, which I think will be a first since I started regularly reading comics.

Lol
"Fake Wonder Girl and Fake Aquaman... but fake Flash is good because I say so."

Yara is the only reason I would consider this book. The old school characters are stale.

I went to Wikipedia to check on this, since I would love to fill in gaps in my childhood collection with trades. What a mess! Part of the problem is that titles changed without restarting the numbering (which would never happen now!).

The Legion of Super-Heroes became a regular feature in Adventure Comics with issue #300,[1] but were relegated to back-up feature beginning with issues #381.[2] The Superboy comic book changed its title to Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes with issue number #197.[3] The name later underwent a slight change to Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes.

In 1973, a four issue limited series titled Legion of Super-Heroes published reprints of stories that originally appeared in Adventure Comics and Action Comics. From a publishing standpoint, the limited series is Legion of Super-Heroes Volume 1.

Beginning with issue #259, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes changed its title, dropping the "Superboy" and becoming simply Legion of Super-Heroes.[4] This generally is considered Legion of Super-Heroes Volume 2.

Yep--so what is missing between Silver Age Omnibus #3 and Superboy and the Legion compendium Vol 1 are all the backup stories in Superboy prior to #197 and Superboy #197 to #233--that's a significant gap.

The "missing" stories were collected in the Legion Archive editions 10-13, which are long OOP and command ridiculous prices. The Omnibus editions were basically re-collecting the Archives, but seem to have stalled with Vol. 3.

I'm in the same boat you are -- too late for the Archives so missing that run of stories. And I figure as soon as I paid out the nose for the Archives on the collector's market, DC would finally announce another Omnibus (one more volume could complete the missing run).

Thanks for that--so I know it doesn't exist yet. I would guess the missing stories would be collected in the Bronze Age Omnibus V.1 if such a thing ever happened. But right now DC is publishing Before the Great Darkness volumes as if that were an event that had been planned or even foreshadowed.

For what it is worth, I bought the Legion from '78 through '86 when I was a kid/teenager. I then started again with the Threeboot.

- The Flash movie gets a comic prequel The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive, guest-starring Batfleck. I'm here for that.
Is this the first we've gotten a tie-in for a DCEU movie? I don't remember seeing any before.
- Earth-Prime, a tie-in to the Arrowverse, since they can't do a crossover event on TV thanks to Covid, this comic is thrown out for us fans. I'm on board, but tbh I'm glad the cover artist isn't doing the interior as well. Bit too stylized for a tie-in to live-action productions IMO.
I keep meaning to check out some of the Arrowverse comics, but I never have.

Yara is the only reason I would consider this book. The old school characters are stale.

Wally West existed as Kid Flash for over 25 years before he became The Flash, and he only took over the role because Barry Allen died. Last time I checked, Cassie Sandsmark (who became Wonder Girl only after Donna Troy had basically stopped using the name anyway) and Arthur Curry are still alive in the main continuity. So, yes, Fake Wonder Girl and Fake Aquaman are shit. I mean, the'd be shit even if Cassie and Arthur were dead, but right now they're shit and pointless.

Yup.

Probably true in both cases.

My assumption is that the comic will follow the lead of the YJ cartoon series where Kaldur/Jackson takes over as Aquaman in the surface world after years of working with the original, so that Orin can concentrate on his actual role as King of Atlantis.

So, yes, Fake Wonder Girl and Fake Aquaman are shit. I mean, the'd be shit even if Cassie and Arthur were dead, but right now they're shit and pointless.

IMO, Yara Flor is mainly annoying because she's just being parachuted into the role with no real set up, whereas Kaldur/Jackson has been a supporting character for around a decade at this point and there's a logical in-universe explanation for him taking over even if they don't bother using it. However, this was mainly in the context of her being Future State!Wonder Woman, as Cassie and Yara team-up in her first "Wonder Girl" appearance so it looks like it's gonna be a dual name-holders thing similar to the multiple GLs or Flashes that we've had for decades, and honestly Cassie's been around long enough that she probably should have "done a Nightwing" and branched off to an original hero-name by now anyway.

YMMV.

More like 6 years--he debuted in the Rebirth special in 2016. And he really hasn't made a lot of appearances until recently. That said, I like the character and I'm looking forward to the new Aquamen series.

It will be interesting to see how many of the 5G characters are popular enough to stick around. I really like Jo from the Far Sector/Green Lantern series and the new Swamp Thing, and Jonathan Kent--but I suspect that even Alec Holland will be back in the title role at some point.

Nope.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaldur'ahm

First appearance as Kaldur'ahm (animated YJ version) was S1E01 of that show, which aired in November 2010.

Due to the extended lead time of animated shows, Jackson Hyde (the comics version) -- though created after -- actually debuted first, appearing in Brightest Day #4 in August 2010.

Like most "sidekick" and young heroes not affiliated with the Bat/Arrow Families he was retcon'd out by Flashpoint (although he appeared in at least the animated movie adaptation), so didn't appear in the N52-era which may be the source of your confusion.

I don't know anything about the television series--I honestly thought he was a new character.

May Solicits are out.

- The Bat titles still dominated by that Shadow War crossover, including several more oneshots. One new Bat-title, the miniseries "Fortress" with art by Darrick Robertson and written by one of the writers of Rogue One, actually sounds interesting and not entirely Bat-focused. Might give this one a chance.
- Might have to go pay the extra buck for the variant cover of Action Comics Annual. I like Francavilla, but he's more fitting for noirish comics. Plus, that Steve Rude cover is gorgeous.
- Black Label Aquaman mini by RAM V. Yeah, I'm in.
- Jurassic League?! Fuck, that's so stupidly genius.
- Nubia oneshot post-Trial of the Amazons. Coronation Special?! Wasn't Nubia made Queen last year?
- Tom King appears to continue excising his own personal post-CIA career demons using Jack Kirby characters. Pass.
- The Milestone reboot continues with new titles Blood Syndicate and Duo.
- JL: Road to Dark Crisis oneshot dealing with the aftermath of the death of the Justice League (which, reading the synopses of the other titles, still doesn't seem to affect the broader DCU). Love that Chris Burnham variant cover.
- FCBD titles including a Dark Crisis prelude and a SuperPets movie tie-in.
- Whole bunch of reprinted Black Adam material to be ready when the movie comes out.
- Fables returns, for those who followed that.
- Mad Magazine celebrates its 70th anniversary. Hm. Let's see what the other costs add up to, if it's not too much, I might add this to my pull list.
- One-Star Squadron concludes. Here's hopin' Mark Russell will be back with another satirical DC miniseries soon. And, yes, I know he writes Ace the Bathound in that anthology title, but I'm not paying eight bucks for ten pages or so.
- Both Suicide Squad and Teen Titans Academy conclude with their May issues. To be followed by new SS and TT titles soon, to be sure.
- The Flash goes undercover in Iron Heights.
- World of Krypton concludes with #6. Looking forward to getting this as a tpb. Speaking of which, Justice League Infinity collection is as good as purchased.
