DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

:guffaw:

You've never met an accountant.

Yeah, sure.

Budgets in relation to profits are often attacked by those refusing to admit even a modest amount of failure of something (like certain movies) which is not as golden as they've claimed after a film's release (sometimes before), which is quite silly and willfully ignorant.

...or it serves as the launchpad for endless excuses.

“I feel like that's the biggest change that I see, tonally, is the Superman incarnations that we're most familiar with, at least from the 2000s, have been heavier and darker,” Mickle said. “It was very much a part of the tone that those movies had. It just put you into a heavier, heavier space. I think what we really wanted to do was really brighten everything up and really lighten it up and make it hopeful, hopeful, hopeful.”

Mickle continued, “That's really what we blend with the visuals. And the tone, the lighting, the cast, I mean, obviously they're just radiant, effervescent, upbeat... It's far more colorful than any of the other Superman films will be, you'll see. And we really derived our color from Superman's palette. It's lots of blues, reds, golds, but then oranges and greens interspersed and really try to keep it in the primary colors, secondary colors and bright, vivid, saturated color.”

I feel like they're not putting enough hopefuls in there. It's like the guy who coined location, location, location. Why not go full Boutros Boutros-Boutros and make it location, location, location, location? Show you care that much more.

To play the game:

Warners did some expectation-setting a few weeks ago through distributors, lowballing the OW at 90-125 million dollars.

Sensibly, then, they'll be disappointed if it comes in under 100 and there will be a coronation if it passes 115.

Numbers can be used to lie just as words can, and that is what a lot of people do with them in online box office discussions.

No one knows exactly how any studio calculates its costs or what they consider successful enough to pursue or why.

This is one reason why people who are unhappy with Warners over their deep-sixing the DCEU are confused by the studio's deep unhappiness with that whole enterprise. Among other things they exaggerate the significance of supposed behind-the-scenes personal conflicts to avoid the reality that major decisions are made primarily within the context of internal financials and accounting.

You can read on the Internet all about what someone supposedly said about an actor or director, after all. You can't read Warners' or Disney's ledgers.

Y'know, in the very beginning I had some doubts about the film as the suit reveal didn't work for me. The more that I've seen over these last few months, the more that it just seems to be hitting all the right things. Yeah, I loved MoS and that world, but these things are finite and new iterations have always been a few years away, so it goes.

I was a little worried about the movie being stuffed full of other heroes, but damn if I'm not excited to see Guy Gardner do Green Lantern and Guy Gardner stuff. Throwing in two JSA'ers, Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl (at least in the comics) was icing on the cake. Getting a live action Metamorpho is the cherry on top or whatever metaphorical topping you prefer. lol

Oh, and Krypto, hell yeah!

Starting the universe in progress? Love it. Fucking hated all the Marvel fans constantly saying that we had to see how all the heroes begin in order for the audience to really get them (we don't as evidenced by any number of ensemble movies like Seven Samurai).

But mostly I love clips like this where Superman talks and acts like a normal person. Not some goody two shoes "boy scout" who doesn't seem to have the emotions or reactions to situations we do. Sure, he has the power of a god, but if he's truly "human", then he'd act like this Superman, not the "above" expressing anger or frustration or the little things that we all do. It's seems like an odd thing, but it just resonates more. Sure, he'll know when to keep it in check, but just seeing him act like US for once is doing a lot for me.

Cavil has been my favorite Superman and part of that is because he's the first guy to really look the part physically for me. I have a feeling come the weekend of July 11, he'll be a close second to Corenswet. I've gotten used to the costume and it's firing on all cylinders for me now. I'm loving the total embrace of the crazy comic book goodness, which is far beyond what Marvel has done. Yeah, I'm okay with the Williams music even if I would've preferred a new one. I feel like this could be the movie that makes Supes popular and, dare I say it, cool.

Anyway, got my tickets for opening weekend, and I'm ready to believe a Superman movie can be fucking awesome.

All of this.
