Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

^ Fortunately, they aren't going anywhere. Read them at your leisure, sir. :)

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

^ What he said. But in case you were hoping for something more, here's a much wordier announcement:

Ugh. Is it really Thursday? Again? Yup, afraid so. Well, if I have to cope with it, so do you.

You know the drill: It is the day of Thor, god of thunder, so Dayton Ward and I present to you our latest pile of drivel: a recap and analysis of the third-season original series Star Trek episode Let That Be Your Last Battlefield,” brought to you by the fine folks at Tor.com.

Ever bought a black-and-white cookie at a deli, bitten into it, and found out only then that it was stale? Well, this is kind of like that, except the taste lasts for 50 minutes.

As long as you’re online, catch up on our recaps-and-analyses of third-season Star Trek with this handy index:

  1. Spock’s Brain
  2. The Enterprise Incident
  3. The Paradise Syndrome
  4. And the Children Shall Lead
  5. Is There in Truth No Beauty?
  6. Spectre of the Gun
  7. Day of the Dove
  8. For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky
  9. The Tholian Web
  10. Plato’s Stepchildren
  11. Wink of an Eye
  12. The Empath
  13. Elaan of Troyius
  14. Whom Gods Destroy
Please leave all comments at the Tor.com article. It makes them feel needed.

If this doesn’t permanently sour your appetite for all things Star Trek, we’ll see you again next week for The Mark of Gideon.” That ought to do it.

Word to your Vulcan.

I've been really enjoying the reviews. Would love to see you guys move onto TNG next.

^ I'm not sure I'm up for tackling a project that massive in scope, but I'm glad you're enjoying the columns. :)

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

How about something a bit smaller in scope. The movies?

It's not the same kind of snark, but The AV Club is currently doing Star Trek: The Next Generation reviews, two episodes at a time, also on Thursdays.

The copious comments section is what really makes those worthwhile. :)

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

I’ve been so busy today checking the digital copyedit on my upcoming Star Trek Vanguard novella “The Stars Look Down” that I nearly forgot to pimp this week’s Star Trek Re-watch column on Tor.com.

Today, the indefatigable Dayton Ward and I give low marks to The Mark of Gideon,” a third-season Star Trek episode that’s all about overpopulation, skewed priorities, and flawed premises.

All I can say is that all of you out there should be very happy that Dayton and I watched this episode, because now you never have to. As always, please leave all comments on the Tor.com article. It creates the illusion for our editors that our blogging fees aren’t just money down a rat hole.

But wait, there’s more! Leave a comment on this thread by noon on Friday 1/21 EST for a chance to win a copy of Dayton’s new Star Trek: Typhon Pact novel, Paths of Disharmony.

Boo-yah.

That’s my rhyme. Catch y’all on the bounce next week when Dayton and I figure out whether That Which Survives is also that which sucks.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

I'm kinda surprised that another publisher can give away Trek books. Or are they being given away by Dayton and/or you?

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

Dayton and/or I supply the books to be given away, as a promotion for our column. Standard procedure is we clear the giveaway with our editor/publisher beforehand.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

What is That Which Survives? A fancy way of describing Twinkies? A documentary about the survival traits of the cockroach? No, it’s a middle-of-the-pack third-season episode of Star Trek, which Dayton Ward and I verbally dissect this week for the tor.com Star Trek Re-watch.

She just needs to touch you, but be warned—it’ll be a bad touch.

As always, please leave all comments on the Tor.com article, so that it’ll look as if someone gives a damn about what a pair of fat-assed writers think of a 42-year-old television episode.

Join us next week when we get blinded by The Lights of Zetar.” Till then, The Trek Abides.

:)

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

In what is rapidly becoming a hybrid of an endurance test and a form of self-abuse, Dayton Ward and I bring you another installment of the Star Trek Re-watch on tor.com. This week Dayton handles the play-by-play recap and I break out the long knives of critical analysis for the third-season episode The Lights of Zetar.”

If psychedelic light shows without music, static “action” sequences, and nonsensical solutions are what you crave, you can call off the dogs—we’ve found all that and less in this week’s 50-minute soporific from Desilu Productions.

The fine print: leave your comments, praise, and insults on the Tor.com article, as no one is likely to ever see them here. Then join us again next week as we review the tale of a man who has lived for centuries, adopting many different identites while looking out for humanity. Sadly, we’re not reviewing Highlander but Requiem for Methusaleh,” and hoping it doesn’t make us grab swords and cut off our own heads in fits of depression.

Hasta la pasta, kids.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

A perfect summing-up of the episode, I thought. Not great, not terrible (although some of Scotty's scenes are painful--why was it that every time Scotty fell in love, he had to do so out of character?), and just how does Kirk come up with his Brilliant Plan, anyway?

As I said over on Facebook, I think you needed way more than three margaritas...

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

Look at that—Thursday again. Brace yourselves, because Tor.com is bringing you another installment of Star Trek Re-watch by Dayton Ward and yours truly. This week, Dayton provides critical analysis and I cough up a snark-tastic recap for the third-season episode Requiem for Methuselah.”

This is actually one of the better entries in Star Trek’s much-maligned third season. Savor it now, because next week we have to show you The Way to Eden.” For those of you already feeling ill at that prospect, emesis bags can be found in the pocket on the backs of the chairs in front of you.

If you require assistance, don’t come crying to us, because at least we warned you—which is more than Star Trek’s viewers on February 21, 1969, were able to say.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

Off to read it right now. These have been fantastic!

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

Damn, I keep forgetting about these and now I've fallen way behind. I'll try to work on getting caught up soon.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

I didn't realize Jerome Bixby was the writer behind "Requiem for Methuselah." The idea of a man who had lived dozens of lives (including some famous ones) would be one he'd revisit in the final thing he wrote, The Man From Earth.

I didn't care for this episode when I saw it again three or four years ago, mostly for the way Kirk acts, but perhaps I should give it another chance.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

The turning of the page brings us once more to Thursday, and that means another foray into Star Trek’s pulpy past on tor.com’s weekly feature, Star Trek Re-watch. This week, Dayton Ward and I risk madness (and alcohol poisoning) to bring you our recap and analysis of The Way to Eden.”

Space hippies, hamfisted Biblical allegories, annoying catch-phrases, implausible plot twists — yeah, this ep’s got it all, Herbert. Yay, brother, we reach—for the remote, to change the channel.

Come back next week as we get high…in the air…with The Cloud Minders.”
