I find it funny that the OP is actively watching the show for the first time and says he wants to not read spoilers and this thread is littered with them.

Between the two of them I'd say Kira, but I agree with the Leeta crowd.

Ask me no questions ...

There are limits to how much discipline can be exercised when talking about a show that has been off the air for sixteen years and has no hope of being resurrected. Moreover, the question is impossible to answer without actually referring to things that happen in the series. A common refrain among the participants in this thread is that over time, they came to love Kira after having been initially attracted to Dax. Why? Development. Which developments in particular? ...

When he´s finished with all seasons he´s likely to start a new thread
voting between Ezri and Jadzia

Leeta is a entertaining character. I like that she is a civilian and her relationship with Rom.

If I were to rank the female regulars on DS9 I'd put her second after Kira. As in Kira>Leeta>Ezri>Jadzia.

Lyta????????????????????

You mean Leeta (Rom: Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedaahhhhhhhhhhhhh)

Damar agrees.

Darn it!

Sorry, I literally just finished Babylon 5 last week. I've confused Leeta, with Lyta X(
Lyta FTW

Lyta ... no, Tagana!

Neither

I choose Lyta.

Lyta? Really? but half her lines were "Oh, Rom!"

I caught four "Oh Roms!" while making this, there may have been some I missed. :)

Bless you all. :D

I wish we had a like button on these boards.

I wouldn't rank them that way. Most obviously, Leeta wasn't a regular. But also her character was very little developed. Bajoran, Dabo girl, purpose of her character is to love and encourage Rom. No family, no friends at the wedding who didn't know Rom better.

I liked how Masterson played her character, but I couldn't rank her with the regulars because we learned so little about her.

I didn't like Ezri at first.

But then I found out that the real reason why they don't like her is because she means change, and Star Trek fans hate changes.

I did like her in the end though.

Addendum:

I never knew Lyta was a dimension hopper. She also survived a ghoul invasion once too.

And yet in the little we learned about her I found her more interesting and endearing than Jadzia.
I just ranked the female characters in the "hero group" I probably should have included Keiko as well. Ezri would rank higher if she had shown up earlier.

So it's Kira>Leeta>Ezri>Keiko>Jadzia

I'm curious, why would rank her higher than Jadzia? She never seemed like a very three-dimensional character to me. (Mind you, Jadzia wasn't super deep either, but at least the writers were trying stuff... albeit rarely.

In her defense, Keiko's reputation as a "harpy" who nags Miles O'Brien doesn't reflect the merits of the character or the strengths of the actress. She was there to be the wife of O'Brien, thus to fill out the family dimensions of his character. Subsequently, O'Brien's motivations are more complex, reflecting the mixing of personalities that comes with a marriage. I don't think the writers got her character entirely right, but it served this purpose well.

Beyond that, Keiko served as a catalyst for several storylines, most importantly In the Hands of the Prophets and The Assignment. She's somewhat myopic in her attitudes in the former, but Rosalind Chao plays the part well, showing that she deserved some time in the spotlight. The latter is a chilling performance. Chao also does well in the supporting role in Hard Time.

Chao was also a good "model" for DS9 fashion. Armin Shimerman and Andrew Robinson got some many great outfits--lots of layered patterns--but only Chao seemed to get a good wardrobe from among the female characters.

I think that the character added a lot to the show. Maybe not as much substantively as Kira and Jadzia, not as high quality as Nicole de Boers, but definitely more than Leeta.

^ Very good points, thank you for elaborating.

Pretty much what Bad Thoughts said. Also I really like seeing civilians on Star Trek shows. A huge part of what makes O"brien on DS9 interesting for me is that he's a family man, it makes him (to me) more real and relatable and Keiko is a huge part of that.

I'd vote for "Neither" if that was a Poll option. Since it's not, I'll abstain from voting.

Kira and Dax are probably the most annoying (every time Kira freaks out and starts screaming and/or crying; every time Dax is simply on-screen with her smug demeanor), badly-acted, and uninteresting characters on show.

If I was forced to prefer one though, I'd choose Kira, because at least Kira has a useful narrative function on the show. The same cannot be said for Dax. The show could have proceeded in almost exactly the same way as it did with very little changes to the scripts had the Dax character never been present, or been entirely deleted after the pilot. That just goes to prove how useless of a character she is. The same is equally true for the second Dax.

I like both characters indeed. They are simply very different in terms of background. Dax learned that being a brainy and a swotter was not enough to be a successful person and hit-and-miss was sometimes the only way. She realized that someone else’s experience couldn't save her from making her own choices. She evolved into a very strong and confident person.

Kira, on the other hand, has never had Dax’ opportunities, she was angry, passionate and deprived of childhood. She developed her personality painstakingly, trying to overcome her grudges and accommodate to her present duties. So my choice is Kira – the angry fighter who had to fight her own demons. I have always viewed her as a “lost generation” case that has to develop a peacetime values. And this is easier said than done.
