Don't see nothing wrong in them suggesting a reference to it. If there's an alien girl involved at some point McCoy could say something along the lines of

"No more alien women for me, the last one I dated had spots and a big slug-thing living inside her".

Something like that would work.

Oooh... then you'd have the canon-ites saying that the Federation didn't know about the slugs until the 24th century!
