Dax is like Yoda

TrekToday and the Star Trek web-site said the following about Farrell's appearance at the Vegas Convention:

Older and wiser now, she said that she believed the 300-plus-year-old Dax should have been "much more grounded — more tolerant of others, more gracious," and recalled that in the early days of Deep Space Nine, she was told, "'Just go watch 'Star Wars' — you're just like Yoda'" to which she replied, "Well, THAT was no help."

In a way I can agree that Dax should be more wise, but I always thought it was the Jadzia element that brought a little spontaneity and craziness to the mix. I never thought of comparing her to Yoda though....

She certainly seemed to be "...wiser...more tolerant of others, more gracious." I can't remember too many other Starfleet officers playing with Ferengi, and messing it up on the holosuites with a horny Klingon on his terms.

It would have been a great idea to make Dax be like Yoda. However, in my view she did not come anywhere close to pulling that off. Unlike Yoda, zero of Dax's lines were memorable, wise, or non-interchangeable with any other character on the show.

I agree with Farrell that in practice, that advice was no help to the Dax character.

^^^^In all fairness to the characters and writers, you can't compare Dax to Yoda. Yoda and Dax were different characters. Dax was not meant to BE Yoda. That was just an example to give the actor some perspective. But she was not Yoda. Yoda was Yoda and Dax was Dax.

Jadzia came across to me as an intelligent and experienced trill, but she definitely wasn't wise.

She might have been more Yoda like in the first season, but after they had delved into the many past lives it must have seemed like an imperitive for Jadzia to assert her own personality into the mix. Anyway, I didn't find Trills especially interesting before Dax. Sisko's recollections of Curzon make it clear that he wasn't Yoda-like either.

The symbiote might be Yoda-like, and that may have been the original intent as formerly Trill hosts personalities were submerged in favor of the smybiont. Jadzia was said to be a departure from canon in that respect and some fans made a note of it at the time. Maybe she just couldn't carry off such a sublime character?
