News David Tennant Does a Podcast with...

I enjoyed the Gordon Brown one more than I expected to. He came across very well in it.

I have always liked Gordon Brown.

I hadn't heard an episode of Tennant's podcast before this one. It reminds me a lot of Alec Baldwin's podcast for WNYC, Here's the Thing, but Tennant is a better interviewer than Baldwin. Baldwin will interrupt his guests when they're on a roll, and he frequently brings the conversation back around to him. Tennant, on the other hand, gave Brown space to talk, and his interjections opened up the conversation more. I'll have to try another.

The Catherine Tate episode is out and it's a wonderful conversation between two old friends.

A couple of interesting things I didn't know:

Tate's surname is a stage name (for guild reasons; I guess there was already a Catherine Ford) and she got Tate from one of her (and my) favorite American sitcoms, Soap.

The series 4 companion wasn't originally going to be Donna, but a new character with a specific actress in mind (Tennant doesn't say who and says she doesn't know). Davies wanted to ask Tate to return first, expecting her to say no, but then she said yes. I don't know if this was mentioned in The Writer's Tale but I had no idea this happened.

Georgia Tennant announced on Twitter today that David Tennant is launching a new podcast called "David Tennant Does a Podcast with..."

Guest stars in podcasts already recorded include Jodie Whitaker, Krysten Ritter, Michael Sheen, Olivia Colman, Ian McKellen, Whoopi Goldberg, Samantha Bee, Jon Hamm, and Gordon Brown.

No release date yet but you can already subscribe wherever you get podcasts.

I've been listening to a lot of podcasts in the last few months so this is right up my alley. Plus, that's one hell of a guest list to start with!
I have just now seen this, subscribed, and commenced downloading. Thanks!

The original companion for Series 4 was to be a character named "Penny Carter," and Davies talks about the character in The Writer's Tale early on. Penny would've been pretty similar to Donna, and when Tate expressed an interest, the script for "Partners in Crime" was rewritten.

I just listened to him being interviewed by Chris Hardwick yesterday. The podcast was only about a month old. He was funny and a great guest. If he mentioned his own podcast I must have missed that part.
Looking forward to him and Jodie talking.

Camping is hard to watch but I do like it. David is funny in an understated way. But Jennifer Garner is great in this. Her character is so unlikeable in general but as the series progresses you understand why she is the way she is.

I took a look at The Writer's Tale when I got home from work.

The new companion for Series 4, as I mentioned earlier today, was going to be named Penny, essentially a Donna-like character but "northern" and about ten-fifteen years younger. One of the names RTD throws out to Ben Cook is Sheridan Smith. He also says "a younger Sarah Parish."

Catherine Tate reenters the picture when they're casting "Voyage of the Damned." (RTD tells Cook he's really excited that Dennis Hopper is interested in what is the Mr. Copper role.) Julie Gardner happened to have lunch with Tate, and Tate tells Gardner, unprompted, that she loved working on "The Runaway Bride" and she hoped that maybe there could be a role for her on Doctor Who in the future. RTD's reaction is, "OMG, David absolutely adores her, but she's so busy and she has a show of her own and why would she want to spend a year working on Doctor Who?" But this gets a conversation going, a deal is worked out, and the background he'd developed for Penny for Series 4 is fitted onto Donna (since RTD admits that Donna, as written in "The Runaway Bride," wouldn't really work as an ongoing companion).

Sheridan Smith, really? That's interesting considering how Lucie Miller was introduced in Blood of the Daleks and her frictional relationship with The Eighth Doctor initially.

Thanks for digging up the additional information.

Also, Penny Carter actually appears in "Partners in Crime" as the journalist who Miss Nightingale discovers snooping around Adipose Industries. RTD apparently felt the name was worth keeping!

I've been keeping my ear out for her since the beginning. I think after Jodie Whittaker and Whoopi Goldberg (and then Tate when she was announced), her interview was the one I've been looking forward to the most.

The Ritter interview was charming as hell. While I knew Ritter got her start in modeling (and was recruited at a mall!) from her interviews on Colbert, I didn't know the details of her time in modeling until now. Crazy how she commuted by bus to New York City (several hours one way) while she was still in high school and eventually had to make the trips educational in order not get into trouble with school for excessive absences.

I also didn't know that the role of Jessica Jones was offered to someone else (she wouldn't say on air, but told Tennant afterwards) and she said that the role would've been quite different with that other actress.

Next week is James Corden. Eh. Give me Samantha Bee already! :scream:

The Corden interview was nice enough and I'm sure fans of his will love it, but the highlight for me is next week is finally Samantha Bee!

Bee’s was great. Tennant is really hitting it out of the park with this podcast, every episode has been engaging and fascinating. Safe to say that he could headline a talk show whenever he tires of acting, hopefully several decades from now.

Yeah, I really loved the Bee interview. Interesting how this was the first one where they delved deeply into the now of things for a good 10, 15 minutes before then tracing back to Bee's career roots as oppose to starting at that point as Tennant's done for most of the other interviews.

Also, I had no idea Tennant was held up at airports multiple times after the election because of the innocuous bit he did for Full Frontal (which aired before the election). It really goes to show how other feckless and humorless this president is.

Today's episode appears to be the last one for the time being considering there wasn't a "Next time..." stinger. They've covered all of the announced guests plus three more (Tate, Corden, and Gardner) so I guess it's time for a well-deserved break for Tennant. Hopefully we'll get more sooner than later!

As for today's episode, Michael Sheen's interview was fascinating as he talked about his early struggles as an actor in the theater as well as his father who worked briefly as a Jack Nicholson impersonator at various events. But the biggest highlight was Sheen's story about meeting up with Neil Gaiman for lunch (years before Good Omens) and the funny and weird twist that happened while they were there.

I meant to bump this sooner but Tennant is returning with new episodes, with the newest dropping yesterday with Jim Parsons.

Upcoming interviews include but not limited to George Takei, Judi Dench, Stacey Abrams, Brian Cox, Elisabeth Moss, Cush Jumbo, Tim Minchin, and Dan Levy.

I was suddenly reminded because Tennant did a Reddit AMA the other day where he talked about the Takei interview and how he would love to do Star Trek...
