I liked him up till a few years ago. He's lost his comedic edge. IMO, the funniest man on late night these days is Craig Ferguson.

Ironically, the last two shows were more of something Craig might've done, in terms of integrating his personal drama into the show's material.

When I was a teenager, Late Night with David Letterman was the show I couldn't miss. I went through high school on six hours of sleep because of that show. The show changed when it went to CBS, but I still like Dave. His style of humor is not for everyone, but I still like it. I don't watch shows that late much anymore, but when I do his is the one I go to first.

As for his personal life, I am surprised that a sharp guy like him would engage in that kind of stuff with employees. He is the boss, and that kind of thing opens up all kinds of problems and liabilities. That is day-one stuff for anyone in a management position nowadays. I am surprised that a guy who seems so guarded would leave himself wide open for something like this scandal. But, watching his on-air "confession" and apologies, I am impressed with the assuredness and straightforwardness he is showing. I don't think anyone else in US television could pull off those few minutes of airtime the way he has, balancing the seriousness with just the right tone of self-deprecating humor.

My gut feeling is that these affairs, though tawdry, were not of a more sleazy, "I'm the boss, sleep with me or else" variety. But still, he did screw up.

Like him, the best late night talk show host ever. Still do like him, but now he has that self-deprecating 'i'm a dirty old man' vibe to him. It makes him funnier actually. To be honest, I think he sort of needed that something extra, as he, at least before the 'scandal' wasn't as good as he used to be.

I dislike Letterman, however, I think the man had guts to tell the public about that issue with the producer. Personally I find Letterman's joke to be lame and distasteful therefore I choose to not watch him on TV cause he's all the time bashing and joking about other people(but that's his way of doing things and scerting around issues, right?). But I also can't stand Jay Leno and his new show reeks for my taste. I'm more of a reality type TV girl..but whatever floats your boat I guess. I'd prefer not to watch Letterman though..I'm sure he really hurt his wife by saying that he slept with his coworkers(that's just..wrong..but Bill Clinton did almost the same thing so what do you expect?!) and I feel sorry for his wife. Anyway, Letterman can say or do whatever he wants-I'm gonna stick to reality TV and NCIS! :D

Let's be clear about the "scandals". Not being cought doesn't mean 9 out of 10 guy in show business, politics, law enforcement, doctors, whatever... didn't do similar. Sex is is very big part of life and not just for trailer park trash.

Outside of that as it doesn't change my perception of the man, he his funny but not as much as he used too as he gets repetitive.

He's a big wig in the entertainment industry. That by definition makes him an asshole. What he did to his wife was disgusting, but it's par for the course in that industry. If every person who's cheated on their spouse in that industry were to be put to death for it, all of Hollywood and Southern California would be laid barren. The only thing putting actors and comedians and producers and writers and directors above cockroaches are talent and pay grades.

He used to be really funny. Not so much anymore, but he's funnier then Leno ever could be.

What I do like about him is that he refuses to kiss is guests ass. If he has someone on he clearly dislikes, he won't hide it. He's the anti-Larry King. He clearly hates Bill O'Reilly, Madonna, and Richard Simmons. When ever Simmons is on there he's just the most condescending asshole in the world to him, and it's pure awesomeness.

I think he's funny. Dry, but funny. I like him.

He had an affair? Who cares? It's between him and his wife (and the blackmailers and the police now, too).

Ironically, the last two shows were more of something Craig might've done, in terms of integrating his personal drama into the show's material.

Back during the NBC & early CBS years, Letterman used to incorporate his personal problems into running gags on the show all the time. There was that crazy woman who kept breaking into his house and his chronic speeding tickets.

If he & Richard Simmons really didn't get along, why does Simmons keep coming back?

I think it's weird that it seems like guests only have public meltdowns on his show and not The Tonight Show. First you had Crispin Glover nearly kick him in the head (and his equally bizzarre apology a few years later). Then Drew Barrymore flashed him on his birthday. Then you had the Joaquin Phoenix wierdness. And while it wasn't a meltdown, I was very surprised by his recent interview with Anne Heche. She's a very bitter, unpleasant woman and he seemed very uncomfortable around her. Then you have this sex scandal and the (not really) "inappropriate" jokes about Sarah Palin's daughter. For such a "private" man, Letterman certainly seems to have a lot of controversy surrounding him, far more than we've ever seen surround Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, or Conan O'Brien.

I like the guy myself. He was definitely in a a rut for long awhile (where it was obvious he was tired and bored by the whole show), but ever since his heart surgery he's become a lot more interesting and fun to watch.

And now that his ratings are taking off, it's obvious he feels more energized than ever. And it's turning his show into something I almost HAVE to watch now (although I admit Stewart and Colbert still have priority with me).

Plus he's got this kind of reassuring, old school broadcaster vibe to him which I really like, and that none of the other hosts have.

I don't care for his interviewing style or show in general, but I like him. The scandal shows that he's not perfect. I didn't doubt that. So I really don't care. I hope that there is healing in his life and those around him, but it really doesn't impact me.

I've always liked Dave; I'm not a fawning groupie or anything, but his humor often appeals to me. Maybe I'm just not overexposed - I don't watch him every night.

As for the 'scandal' - if we was doing anything illegal, then it might be a 'scandal,' but if it was consensual and didn't consist of any harassment, it's nothing to vilify him over. He works in a business where his staff are probably the majority of the people he gets to associate with - even his public long-term partners were co-workers and staff at some point; not everyone has the luxury of only being able to have relationships outside of work. It probably wasn't wise to have clandestine affairs with co-workers while in a long-term relationship already, but let's face it: dating for 26 years isn't exactly a demonstration of deep, passionate commitment. The truth is, we don't know the details. OTOH, the DA believed there was sufficient evidence that the blackmailer's intent was blackmail, and not a misinterpreted effort to interest Dave in a script - there was clear wrongdoing on his part, where Dave's actions appear to have been, at worst, misguided.

I'd be willing to bet he never does it again, though ;).

I like him just fine. I'd rather watch Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert...but after that, Letterman.

And frankly, I don't care what he does in his personal sex life. None of our business anyway, and I like the fact that he called a blackmailer's bluff.

At least Letterman works for his dough. A blackmailer is just a scumbag criminal and deserves to be exposed for being exactly that.

Agreed on all three points! :techman:

Letterman will get the last laugh. His ratings are going up.

I thought he was a douchebag well before last week... he was pretty funny in his NBC days though.

I've caught at least an hour or two of Letterman over the years. I've never heard him say anything even remotely interesting. The man is positively soporific.
