David (Harry Potter) Yates to direct Doctor Who The Movie!

in the highly unlikely event of the dumbasses in government ditching the license fee, the Beeb would be lunatics to cancel Doctor Who, when they could sell ad space for that at a premium.

True enough. Plus, does the BBC have anything else in its repetoire that sells as well internationally and has as much merchandising $$?

"Downton Abbey"? Not saying it is in the same realm of "Doctor Who" of course but it is gaining more and more international attention acclaim and is the only thing I can think of other than DW that has reached this kind of attention.

I thought the BBC now owned Primeval and they have Being Human and The IT Crowd.

BBC Worldwide are co-funding Primeval, and have the international rights distribution rights, IT Crowd is Channel 4 and BBC Worldwide are just selling their international rights for them.

As for international hits, well Top Gear is huge, it seems there are a lot of other hits though not as big as Doctor Who there, too. Sherlock, Merlin, Spooks, Hustle, Being Human, all seem to sell fairly well. Lots of formats that sell, too. But whether these belong to the Beeb or indies I'm not sure.

There's also Strictly Come Dancing which the Beeb have pretty much licensed everywhere (apparently there is a version on Skaro where Davros is judge alongside Len...)

The Variety article stated that.

No, Yates told Variety that he was working with Tranter. Ms. Tranter has not confirmed this statement.

Yet there's no reason for Tranter to confirm that Yates is working with her on developing a Doctor Who film. If Yates' statements were false, then there would be a reason for her (and Worldwide) to deny it. Moffat and Russell don't work for Tranter or Worldwide, so their denials don't actually have any weight.

Actually, didn't Russell come to America to work with Trantor? Or was that just for Torchwood S4?
No. Tranter's move to Los Angeles was separate from RTD's and for different reasons. Tranter went to Los Angeles to get film projects off the ground, Julie Gardner and RTD went to Los Angeles to develop television series for the BBC in co-production deals with Hollywood studios, such as Torchwood: Miracle Day for Starz and Cucumber for Showtime.

Moffat works for the BBC though so you'd think his word would have a bit more pull and merit than a director who supposedly had a conversation with one of their overseas divisions. David Yates is a fine director but the very origin of this story has made me question his word from the start, since Trantor (correct me if I'm wrong) has not confirmed there was a meeting between them. It just feels like to me that Yates has been yapping from the start. I'm kind of surprised that some people would take the word of Yates over the actual show runner, which adds to the fishiness of the story to me.

That is certainly one possible explanation for what's going on here. Another is that Yates approached Tranter casually and discussed the possibility of a Doctor Who movie with no firm commitment from Tranter one way or another. Still another is that Yates' statement is false and Tranter et al are keeping quiet to avoid embarrassing a popular director or to gauge audience reaction.

Tranter's silence one way or the other basically means that there is exactly one source of info about Yates' involvement in a Doctor Who movie and that is Yates himself. And this is in the face of denials from the people responsible for the current, active production.

I'd love to see a Doctor Who movie. Yates seems likely to do a good job. But his claims remain unsubstantiated at this time and might be little more than a self-serving attempt to stay relevant in the industry after the conclusion of a hugely popular series of Potter films.

^ I agree with this and kind of one the points I've been trying to make this whole time. I like Yates, and have been a fan of his Harry Potter films, but until the BBC actually confirms this with an official statement then I don't put any merit into what Yates says.

But, the BBC hasn't denied his claims right? That's got to mean something. My theory is that this film is slated for after Moffat's expected departure. They just don't want to state that and cause an uproar! Particularly when planning for a film doesn't mean it will actually happen. So, it could be an uproar over nothing!

The only people denying the story are Moffat, who was clearly taken completely by surprise when the story first broke and has held a grudge ever since and Edward Russell, whose job is to keep media attention on the TV Series.

The BBC hasn't confirmed or denied anything to do with this story as far as I understand, the only things we know are that Moffat has continued to deny it, and Yates continues to say it is going to happen "but not for a few years yet". I still find it curious that the BBC won't say anything about this one way or another and continues to let the story fester.
