On occasion it has been suggested to be Dumb Ass Tiresome Android.
It wasn't all CAPS - DATA; just written as an ordinary proper name, Data. No acronym at all.
Seconding Mutai - it's not an acronym, just Data like in data. Well, sort of.

You are mixing up DATA with Geordie's VISOR.

I'm just curios about something: if TNG returns in some form that requires Brent Spiner to perform as Data AND Brent is interested in it BUT he does not want to wear the makeup ... what options might there be? I've been wondering if they didn't make B-4 have a meltdown or some shit and have to put Data's mind into something else. Another type of an android, perhaps a Maddox-type that was more robotty and not as realistic as even B4 was. Basically, have Brent wearing a C-3PO type costume. Does that sound like it would appear acceptable or what other options might Brent have, other than wearing makeup and being de-aged with CGI?

If they wanted Spiner to play Data again just say he intentionally aged his appearance to be more human.
Then again, it could have been Digital Arik Template Android. After all, Arik Soong was the ancestor that initiated the Soong long-term research line into artificial lifeforms. Perhaps this was Soong's way of honouring him. Also, he bore an uncanny resemblance to Noonian Soong (and therefore to Data).

Noonien simply named him Data because he intended to give him no emotion and make him focus on...data. Or maybe Noonien thought that without emotions, his son would be more like a database than a person (how wrong he was, then !).
Or he just had a special sense of what a name would be like. "Lore" sounds pretty original too - I'm sure the production named him that way because he was part of Data's lore.
That being said, well...Data is Data, that's just his name. There isn't a need for an explanation, after all.
