Data in "Skin of Evil"

Captain McBain

Captain
Captain
Could Data have taken out Armus? Or would the android have been destroyed had Picard not stopped him from jumping in the tar pit?

The humor-impaired entry:

Did Armus ever demonstrate invulnerability? It surrounded the shuttle when it felt threatened by our heroes' phasers (the big ones up in orbit) - an action one would expect from a creature that recognizes its vulnerability.

OTOH, what could Data possibly have done to a pool full of tar? He could only exert mechanical force, and he wouldn't have much leverage available down in the pit.

...Which, surprisingly enough, might be a good way to kill a watery creature. If you punch the surface hard (and fast) enough, you send shockwaves through the substance, hopefully damaging something.

It's the shockwaves-through-fluid thing that kills you when somebody fires a rifle bullet through you, too; those waves mulch your innards, while the actual hole and the resulting loss of blood are secondary concerns. Data's fist might plausibly move at the speed of a bullet...

It seems Armus really had no vulnerable spots. He 'ate' the energy of the phasers. However, I wonder if Armus could destroy Data. In "Disaster," Data walks through an arc of 500,000 amps, and is relatively unharmed. Could Armus produce that much energy? If it had hit Tasha with that much energy, she would have died instantly.

If Data had stepped into that pit he would have won. The power of plot shielding is impervious to any Trek villain.

Initially I thought "crushed like a soda can," but since Data apparently has a built-in flotation device, that could change everything...

Really, one must take all the factors into account. As with what Timo said earlier, that if you hit the surface of liquid hard enough; you could very well damage something. As for how much electricity Armus was capable of producing, we may never know. So in a battle between my lovely Data and this black puddle of goo, I'd say that the fight would either be equal or more to Armus' favor because we know so little about him; save for the fact that he "eats" phaser energy to survive.

Well Data in season 1 wasn't the same android who could casually take machine gun fire before politely greeting them. I mean arrows seemed to do damage to him early on. :P

No he doesn't! You take that back!!

Seriously though, let's pretend that never happened. Not only is it a silly throwaway joke, it disregards a conversation from Descent.

Descent > Insurrection. :)

Only if you assume the floatation device was something he always had, rather than something he added to his systems after that particular event (perhaps to stop it happening again).

Besides:
Humour > continuity.

:)
