Dark Passions

Re: Voyager Dark Passions

I thought they were fun books. Nothing spectacular but enjoyable nonetheless.

Re: Voyager Dark Passions

They're good for a romp, the literary equivalent of a popcorn flick, but they don't fit the premise very well. Humans, supposedly oppressed, are or wind up in positions of power all over the quadrant, and while the book (I know there were two, but this is a good case of split-book syndrome) supposedly predates the MU DS9 episodes, as I recall, but ended on a note that didn't fit the atmosphere of the episodes themselves.

Is Dark Passions a bodice ripper (trashy romance novels)?

I saw them at a store and laughed pretty hard.

It was also kind of insulting.

What is the deal with them? Are then any good? What kind of books are they?

Edit: I see they are written by a woman...

Re: Is Dark Passions a bodice ripper (trashy romance novels)?

No... and yes. There are a number of ways Dark Passions calls back to pulpy, 'bad girls' kind of material, but it's always done in a self-conscious fashion, and the series itself revolves around powerful women. There is an element of pastiche, but it's not overwhelming.

Re: Voyager Dark Passions

I've never quite figured that one out, if som many women are lesbians, and since what the men are doesn't quite seem to figure into the equation, how come there are still so many children born?
There are a lot of things in the Mirror Universe that you just have to accept, even though they make no logical sense.

The idea that so many 24th-century characters from the "prime" universe also exist in some capacity in the Mirror Universe is preposterous on its face. The "butterfly effect" of the Empire, its collapse, and the rise of the Alliance would have had an effect on conceptions, births, upbringings, and the like.

But for the sake of storytelling, we accept that there's a Riker, a Picard, a Troi, etc., in the Mirror Universe.

Personally, I blame the Alien Space Bats.

That's an excellent point, one which has mildly annoyed me, but I suppressed it so that I could enjoy those episodes for what they were.

Thanks, does not look like my type of thing.

Re: Is Dark Passions a bodice ripper (trashy romance novels)?

dragged one home with a bunch of old Trek books from the used bookstore in town - it's a Voyager book - what could be better - a bodice ripper with Janeway?

Re: Voyager Dark Passions

thanks for the info. I bought a copy at my local used book store not realizing it was an MU book - bought it because it was a Voyager book. anxious to read it now - I'm sure it's nothing too risque - this is pocket/TrekLit after all!

Re: Voyager Dark Passions

Dark Passions isn't a Voyager book. It includes VGR characters, but it also includes TNG and DS9 characters. It's a general 24th-century Mirror Universe duology focusing on the female characters. Book One is mainly about Kira, Deanna, and Annika/Seven, while Book Two brings in Janeway and Beverly.

Compared with the author's other stuff, they're VERY tame!
