Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on DVD!

  • The people of Lawndale just don't get Daria Morgendorffer. She's cool with that. See, Daria was born alienated, and now she's just trying to make it through high school with as little human contact as possible. Popularity, friends, activities...whatever. Daria lacks enthusiasm, but she makes up for it with sarcasm.
Since last summer we've known that MTV and Paramount Home Entertainment is preparing a 2010 DVD release for the animated series Daria, the 1997 spin-off of Beavis and Butt-head. This morning Paramount has officially announced the title, giving us a release date of:
May 10, 2010
Daria - The Complete Animated Series on DVD will, according to the studio, contain "ALL FIVE SEASONS PLUS BOTH MOVIES!" The running time is 1606 minutes (almost 27 hours!), and video is listed as full screen.

Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on DVD!

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

Awesome! I remember they had a marathon a few years ago and I recorded most of the episodes on VHS but I don't know where those tapes have gone. I loved this show.

About fucking time!!! :D

This is definitely going on my wish list.

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

About time. Now if we can just get "Downtown" and "The Maxx" on DVD. MTV used to have some kickass programming, especially their animated programming.

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

At long, long last. I've been waiting for this news for what feels like forever. Believe it, for a long time it felt like Daria would never be released on DVD, forever stuck in copyright limbo. And now it's here, and it really seems like they're putting a little effort into the final product too!

Actually, there is a Downtown set available - the series creator, Chris Prynoski, created a DVD set and released it through his own animation company. The DVDs are technically promotional discs, but are perfect quality, and every episode has a full commentary (some carried out under the heavy influence of alchohol....)

Apparently Amazon are attempting to get a Maxx DVD set produced.

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

I heard that on tvshowsondvd.com, this has been in the top 5 most voted shows that people want on DVD that haven't been released yet. I was surprised to learn that it's so popular. I hope #1 ('60s Batman) isn't far behind!

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

I thought I saw a Maxx DVD come out several months ago? I've never seen Daria, is it any good? I just recently saw Beavis and Butthead for the first time on DVD and it was mildly funny. What kind of show is Daria?

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

This is very, very good news.

I might be a middle aged guy, but I really like this cartoon. Daria says all the things I wish I'd been smart enough to say when I was at school. And I've met some of the characters back in those days, certainly Upchuck and Jane.

Hmmm. Glad I'm not a teen any more.

I'm a middle aged guy too (41 &1/2) and as a 30-something Gen-X'er, I loved this show, and am also glad to see it on DVD. I hope that the song rights have been worked out-I'd hate to buy or rent the set only to have generic sounding music where the songs were (what happened to the WKRP In Cincinnati season sets).

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

Yay!

I got the Daria thing a lot when I was a kid, which only marginally annoyed my stunningly masculine sensibilities.

(Nods)

Yes...

Yeah, me too.

I remember watching the show once when the song over the closing credits got into my brain and wouldn't leave. I didn't know who it was for ages - until I found a Daria website that lists the music used (yes, I am that sad). After a process of elimination I found out that it was a Juliana Hatfield song. I knew I recognized the voice...

:D

The character Daria actually originated in B&B, but her own show is very different. It's a satirical cartoon comedy that mocks the conventions of high school (both on TV and in real life) and American society in general. Daria is a cynical, sardonic bookworm caught in a world dominated by jocks and bimbos; whether one enjoys the show or not really depends on how much you like her character. I recommend seeing a few episodes first.

I'd say they succeeded...

Buyer beware, it sounds like a DVD-R release, read the reviews.

I've never actually watched any B&B apart from ...Do America and a YouTube clip of the bit where they're Picard and Riker. Was Daria's character very different on B&B?

"Diarhea cha cha cha" (you'd have to be there)

The character was close but the shows are very different in tone and aim.

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

If you think of Anderson(?) from B&B evolving into Hank Hill, Daria sort of performed a similar transformation in terms of eclipsing the source material.

I really really really wanted her and Trent to work out.

Re: Daria - Here It Is, MTV's Release Date (and Extras) for Daria on D

^^ I don't know, I was pretty fond of the source material. And I loved Tom Anderson.
