Dangerous Public Service Jobs

I just got my Firefighter 1 in the San Juan County Volunteer Fire Department, and am also an EMT Basic. I was just wondering how many trekkers on this forum were in a public service job (currently or formerly on the job) such as rescue, fire, police, EMS, military, etc?
If I'm not mistaken, marillion is a Forest Service firefighter based in your general vicinity.

Congratulations, and good for you. There's no higher calling than saving lives. And how the hell do you pronounce your name? :rommie:
Em-tee-bee-lillie is the way I've been reading it.

One or two of us rozzers on the board. None are moderators. Take from that what you will ;)
Yeah, we need the real tough guys. What's a rozzer?
A rozzer is a police officer.
Thanks and thanks.

^^^Yup M-T-B-Lillie. It was something I was coming up with when I was 12 and was looking online for a mountain bike (MTB) and my last name is Lillie.

I guess I shoulda left out "dangerous," and by that I don't necessarily mean life threatening. Even as a firefighter I don't think I've ever really felt like my life was REALLY in danger, though I have done dangerous things on more than one occasion, but I've never really felt like I would die.

I'm not trying to make it a competition, I was just curious. Any public service job will do, but my curiosity was more into those who do it for a passion rather than a paycheck. As an EMT/Firefighter, I don't get payed. I work at a doctors office during the day for a paycheck, but at night I respond to 911 calls.

Ok, after all that, I don't mean don't post any public service job, I think any public service/customer service job takes a lot will power even if it isn't dangerous, but my real question is who does it because they like it?

PS, kudos to all those that posted, thank you for answering!

Hey there mtblillie..

Sorry I'm late to the parade.. Congrats on getting your FF 1 quals.. You're in for a busy time, I'm afraid..

As was stated by Seph and M'Sharak, I'm in the wildland fire biz in New Mexico and serve as a FF 2 and a Type I Fire Info officer..

So while my usual job isn't that dangerous normally, I've been in a few sticky situations..

Again, congrats and good luck!!

Oh Nice! Maybe I'll see you out there on a deployment then? My grandfather was a Firefighter for the Forest Service before he was a ranger in Durango, so he is kind of subtly pushing me to do more wildland stuff.

I was joking, you know. ;)

I'm FF1/2 in Connecticut. Volunteer department. I'm waiting on my instructor cert to come in from the state. Congrats on your cert...

How many runs a year?

I like helping people, so I've worked in some aspect or other of health care since about 1985. I like knowing that doing my job, along with a kind word and sympathetic ear, can improve the quality of somebody's life.

Maybe so.. It depends.. California rarely brings in out of state resources unless they have a major complex of fires going or a lightning siege like they did a couple of years ago. I spent two weeks up north west of Redding in the Shasta Trinity in 2008.. I should have clarified that I'm with New Mexico State Forestry rather than the Forest Service, so my changes for deployment aren't as great until our fire season ends in August...

Alpha.. Glad to see another FF on here as well. I have nothing but the deepest respect for our volunteer departments. Men and women putting up their time and energy to defend their homes and communities. We rely on them so heavily for inital attack on wildfires. They do an amazing job.

Ya I know it is a long shot for us to meet up in the field I just thought it would be pretty cool! May I ask where in New Mexico you are located?

Such an awsome feeling isn't it? I know a lot of people do stressful jobs for the paycheck but personally I feel that certain jobs require some sort of passion to keep doing, otherwise you'll burn out really fast, especially when it involves other people's suffering.

Cool to see another FF out here! Especially another volunteer one. That's cool your working on your instructor certification, I know out here they have to pull instructors from several different districts in the county to cover the academy, including EMS, Intro Fire, HAZMAT ops, and now FF1. Like I said we usually run between 500 and 700 a year, this year is a little slower though, we are on run 307, including code 700s (false tones).

Thanks. We are a fire/ems/rescue department. So we do medicals, rescues and fire. We run almost 2K per year...mostly medicals and rescues.

Here is a link to a massive structure fire we went to last night. Unfortunately, MR. Bud Light kept me from going to this call.

Wow.. Just as I'm saying that California rarely calls in outside resources, we're sending all kinds of ground crews and engines to help with the big fires out there.. Geeez.. I've put in for assignment, but haven't heard anything as of yet.

My office is in Santa Fe, but I live in Albuquerque. I cover the entire state when it comes to fire information. I don't generally go to many fires in the far reaches of the state as we're usually dealing with several and my boss doesn't want me to get pigeon holed with no back up.

Are you seeing any action with teh fires going on there yet?

^^^ I havn't heard of any upcoming deployments yet, but I'm not red-carded yet so I wouldn't be able to go even if I was available. Unfortunately we get most of our spending money from big deployments so I hope our county does get involved. We were hurting pretty bad last year with it being a slower fire season, the worst part being that we were still blowing the money from '08 on new apparatus and equipment, so all of a sudden we were broke.

Good luck if you go down to Cali, and as always, be safe. May your shroud be strong and your chains be plentiful, and always remember your LACES :P

:).. Always... My Danners got plenty broken in this season... Get that red card going.. I'm assuming you mostly just need your pack test?

I think so. I took several S1-somthing tests during our fire academy, not 100% sure if I need any more though.
