Thanks and thanks. If I'm not mistaken, marillion is a Forest Service firefighter based in your general vicinity.I just got my Firefighter 1 in the San Juan County Volunteer Fire Department, and am also an EMT Basic. I was just wondering how many trekkers on this forum were in a public service job (currently or formerly on the job) such as rescue, fire, police, EMS, military, etc?
Em-tee-bee-lillie is the way I've been reading it.Congratulations, and good for you. There's no higher calling than saving lives. And how the hell do you pronounce your name?![]()
A rozzer is a police officer.Yeah, we need the real tough guys. What's a rozzer? One or two of us rozzers on the board. None are moderators. Take from that what you will![]()
Hey there mtblillie..
Sorry I'm late to the parade.. Congrats on getting your FF 1 quals.. You're in for a busy time, I'm afraid..
As was stated by Seph and M'Sharak, I'm in the wildland fire biz in New Mexico and serve as a FF 2 and a Type I Fire Info officer..
So while my usual job isn't that dangerous normally, I've been in a few sticky situations..
Again, congrats and good luck!!
I was joking, you know.I guess I shoulda left out "dangerous," and by that I don't necessarily mean life threatening. Even as a firefighter I don't think I've ever really felt like my life was REALLY in danger, though I have done dangerous things on more than one occasion, but I've never really felt like I would die.
I'm not trying to make it a competition, I was just curious. Any public service job will do, but my curiosity was more into those who do it for a passion rather than a paycheck. As an EMT/Firefighter, I don't get payed. I work at a doctors office during the day for a paycheck, but at night I respond to 911 calls.

I like helping people, so I've worked in some aspect or other of health care since about 1985. I like knowing that doing my job, along with a kind word and sympathetic ear, can improve the quality of somebody's life.Ok, after all that, I don't mean don't post any public service job, I think any public service/customer service job takes a lot will power even if it isn't dangerous, but my real question is who does it because they like it?

Oh Nice! Maybe I'll see you out there on a deployment then? My grandfather was a Firefighter for the Forest Service before he was a ranger in Durango, so he is kind of subtly pushing me to do more wildland stuff.
Maybe so.. It depends.. California rarely brings in out of state resources unless they have a major complex of fires going or a lightning siege like they did a couple of years ago. I spent two weeks up north west of Redding in the Shasta Trinity in 2008.. I should have clarified that I'm with New Mexico State Forestry rather than the Forest Service, so my changes for deployment aren't as great until our fire season ends in August...

I'm FF1/2 in Connecticut. Volunteer department. I'm waiting on my instructor cert to come in from the state. Congrats on your cert...
How many runs a year?
Cool to see another FF out here! Especially another volunteer one. That's cool your working on your instructor certification, I know out here they have to pull instructors from several different districts in the county to cover the academy, including EMS, Intro Fire, HAZMAT ops, and now FF1. Like I said we usually run between 500 and 700 a year, this year is a little slower though, we are on run 307, including code 700s (false tones). ____________

Ya I know it is a long shot for us to meet up in the field I just thought it would be pretty cool! May I ask where in New Mexico you are located?

Such an awsome feeling isn't it? I know a lot of people do stressful jobs for the paycheck but personally I feel that certain jobs require some sort of passion to keep doing, otherwise you'll burn out really fast, especially when it involves other people's suffering.
