Dalek timeline

And when you think about it, it's never really been explained how the Daleks survived their supposed destruction at the end of their debut story. I think later shows argued that their subsequent appearances all occurred before The Daleks, but then Planet of the Daleks had the Third Doctor refer to himself, Barbara, Ian and Susan helping the Thals fight the Daleks on Skaro.

And when did the Daleks abandon Skaro? Planet of the Daleks implied that the Thals were the inhabitants of the planet by the 26th century AD, and it had been abandoned for quite some time in Destiny of the Daleks.

I would suggest seeking out Lance Parkin's books on Who continuity (History of The Universe and Ahistory). They try to make sense of the timeline.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth has the Doctor claiming that The Daleks took place a million years in the future! That doesn't make sense even if you only take these two serials into account.

Did it state in The Daleks that that was their ONLY city...?

^And as the Doctor had only met the Daleks once in his lifetime, and knew little of them, it's possible his 'million years in the future' comment was just speculation.

That requires us to ignore the idea that The Daleks takes place after The Dalek Invasion of Earth, though. Two serials in, and Dalek chronology was irrevocably borked.
