CW preps 'Dick Grayson' series

I don't even get the name recognition point of view. How many people on the street would connect Dick Grayson with Robin if mentioned out of context? Or even worse "The Graysons". They would have to name the show something like "The Gotham Graysons"
Now, Tim Drake on the other hand, you could make into a fine ABC Family channel show. I mean, this is a 12 year old kid who figured out who Batman is. He must have been solving mysteries all over the place. Do sort of a "Wonder Years" crossed with "Young Indiana" vibe on it. They could have that same opening narration thing and do mysteries and sometimes travel to exotic places seeing as his family is rich. Envision this as an opening narrative for an episode:

They say who we are as an adult is a reflection of our childhood. When I was about 10 I remember starting to hear stories about "The Batman". I also remember my first day of middle school and meeting Stephanie Brown for the first time. She had just had her lunch money stolen.....

What will save this series is the Batman rogues gallery Warner has approved for use. Can you imagine the fan clamor when Dick faces off against the Ratcatcher?

About the only thing that could salvage it for one episode would be a Deadman appearance. Hell, that's the series they should have made if they were dead set on circus acrobats.

Robin is one of the most popular DC characters, but he's basically a non-entity before his parents get whacked.

If this were a show about Robin, I think it could be awesome. But this...the only way it'll work is to completely throw out the entire character premise. Which is probably what they'll do.

Personally I don't like for a series to take place pre-origin.

Yeah, people know Robin, I'm not sure about the Graysons. Even if they do, that's not exactly an exciting and unique name.

This would make more sense.

Great another Gotham City show without Batman. Didn't they already look their lesson with Birds of Prey? :wtf:

For them it's probably "Birds of what?" ;)

I hope it's not overly stylized like "Birds of Prey". Since we're getting shows about heroes before they were heroes, could a Peter Parker series work now?

Its going to be dejavu(Smallville) all over again

"Dick Grayson is 27 years old and he still isn't Robin!'
lol

What an utterly abysmal idea. I sure as hell hope this doesn't go to show and stain the Batman franchise. It has the ability to be even worse than Batman and Robin.

I wouldn't worry too much. I predict it'll end up like Aquaman, the last Smallville concept spin-off.

One episode long, which never aired on TV.

I read someone saw it on canadian tv as a tv movie.

Oh I can't wait till all the bad pop culture references and nods to the comics are spilled into the actors voices

"Don't worry Dick, your gonna fly LIKE A ROBIN"

I'll check it out to be sure. It could be decent or it could really suck. There are other areas which they could explore. Teen Titans, Nightwing, rejiggered Birds of Prey and others. They can't go with the established stars since they are planning new/more movies on Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash and Batman. They could also do an origin series based on a villian, which would be different and cool.

Robin is one of the least popular characters in DC history.
One of the most, I would say; he's got greater name recognition than anyone except Batman and Superman, and has been a consistent part of the franchise since 1940; clearly, he's doing something right. He's hard to transfer to live action, though.

You know, in the first decade of the 21st century I don't know that circus families have a high "relateability" quotient for most adolescents...

im going to say what I said before theCW decided to make 90210

"I wouldnt be surprised if the CW did make a Smallville spin-off about the young Dick Grayson"

so far im batting 1/1 lets see what this does for my average

Presumably Dick Grayson and his parents get into all sorts of adventures when they're not swinging on the trapeze.

I got Speed Racer vibes off that

Grayson Sr: DJ, I do not think you should be in this race! Ha-ha! The Mach 5 is not ready! Ha-ha!

Dick: But Pops, I must be in this race! Ha-ha!

Grayson Sr: Very well. But I am not really your father! Ha-ha!

Dick [Exclaiming]

Smallville, while a terrible show, generally, at least had an understandable narrative concept: following a superpowered teenager as he grew up and became Superman. That's got a lot of grounding in the pre-Crisis continuity.

I really don't see how this works as a concept. Dick has no powers, and, until his parents died, he has no motivation to be anything like the character he became. Moreover, since this is intended as an ongoing series, if it's successful, they'll be continually pushing back the point where he actually becomes Robin.

and Checkmate.

Any chance that disgust over this will be heard as it was on the Jack Black as Green Lantern and it just will not happen?

Now, Tim Drake on the other hand

As someone who never really followed the comics much, the name Dick Grayson is *much* more recognizable than Tim Drake.

But that's just it. Grayson is not like other teens. He is far more flexible and acrobatic. It sets him apart and leaves him isolated as he struggles to hide his secret yet fit into the tricky world of high school; a world already littered with doubt and angst. What would the kids at Gotham High do if they ever saw him do a double standing back flip or the full splits? They would ostracize him for being so very different. And he doesn't want to be different anymore. This dilemma will take many hours of screen time - and DJ Grayson brooding in close up - to resolve.

I don't know about you, but it sounds like a sure fire winner to me.

If this show is a go, somehow the CW will find a way to do an episode with Dick Grayson, Jason Todd AND Tim Drake together in action.

Wow...I felt my stomach lurch when I first read the article on mania.com and it wasn't with anticipation. Everything to avoid doing a Batman series which would be the most logical choice to prusue since everyone still has the Dark Knight on the mind. WB/CW should dissolve the embargo and bring us the Bruce Wayne series that eventually turned into Smallville. Hell I would even take the Aquaman series, the pilot was half decent and I'm a big fan of Justin Hartley's work with Green Arrow so far. If Aquaman couldn't get its pilot to air then I doubt Graysons will be...they could only go so far without totally destroying Robin's continuity. Aging him was one of the mistakes they made in Batman and Robin afterall...

You know, if the CW wanted a new super hero show, why didn't they just spin off Green Arrow? He's been established on Smallville and his return last season scored a pretty good rating.

I don't have much hopes for Grayson. Realistically, Dick Grayson can't be that old when he's orphaned. Not to mention the fact that with his background altered, how is it really going to be Dick Grayson?

I think this kind of series is hard to do when the character has no powers too. Flash is quick, Aquaman likes the water, Superman is strong...Dick Grayson is just Dick Grayson without any powers or recognizable background.

Exactly. This plays in to Grayson not having a power or a recognizable trait.
