Current Popular British Comedies?

The current crop are all pretty poor IMO.

I'm quite enjoying Episodes, which seems to get better with each instalment, though it's questionable whether you should classify it as a British sitcom or not. I'd say it is.

The other comedy I enjoyed last year was "The Trip" - which was essentially Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon go on a tour of restaurants together and do their usual thing, albeit only partly improvised. Those two always make me laugh.

The Trip was quite good, but I wouldn't want to see another batch of episodes. It was what it was. I do want to actually try some of the restaurants they went to. They're genuine restaurants and some looked pretty good.

Come Fly With Me is probably the latest big thing, from the Little Britain crowd.

I really didn't think much of the couple of episodes I caught. Haven't tuned in since.

Not Going Out is fine. Not outstanding but decent enough and usually raises a smile.

For those of you who live in the future, This Is Jinsy starts it's first series in a few months. But not on The Beeb like it's pilot. On Sky. Harrumph.

And how I forgot this I don't know, The Thick of it is a must watch.

I wish I had Tucker's Law embroidered on a tea-towel. :guffaw:

Now I want one too.
The one thing I like to do when watching "The Thick Of It" is to imagine how sweet Danny Oldsen from "Local Hero" would have turned out had he entered politics instead of the oil industry.

Oh yeah I loved Spaced and League of Gentlemen. I saw Extras too.

If you liked Spaced you might want to check out Big Train. It's a sketch show rather than a sitcom but it has some of the same talent as Spaced, though it's quite a few years old now.

Ironically I'm probably as behind the times as you are in regard to current UK comedy (and any other comedy when it comes it it.) Aside from a few stand-up acts it's actually been ages since I've seen anything new that appeals to me. I must be getting old.

To alter the question slightly, what are the current brit-coms with the highest RATINGS? I know that Little Britain was hugely popular even though a lot of people despised its low brow humor and total reliance on catchphrases.

I dont think as many people liked Little Britain as is generally thought. Whenever the BBC get any good comedy they rely on all their connections to big it up, get it nominated for awards, and give lots of exposure to its stars. They did the same thing with Gavin and Stacey, despite it being an average show, got those guys a sketch show and a movie deal. This has led to James Corden thinking he's massively funny.

tonight on kera we have :

1) as time goes by
2) keeping up appearances
3) the old guys
4) outnumbered
5) 'Allo! 'Allo!

Of the ones you've not mentioned you've seen, the "hip" ones to see are Peep Show, The Inbetweeners, The Thick of It and Psychoville (this last especially if you like the League of Gentlemen.) All are hugely recommended. :techman:

I miss Absolutely Fabulous. It used to come on BBCA, but after it stopped and I had the episodes hogging my DVR, my husband bought me the complete series DVD. I really haven't watched any Brit comedies since.

My parents never understood what I found so funny about AbFab. I suspect part of that was not always understanding their accents in addition to the style. The one time my mother claimed to understand what was said was the 'she's so cold, her period comes in ice cubes'. She laughed for a week. :)

Come Fly With Me is probably the latest big thing, from the Little Britain crowd. Launced on Xmas day and already been repeated. It's been renewed for a second series.

It's dreadful. Outnumbered is cringe-makingly awful too. The rest of the current crop mentioned here are pretty good. Miranda is great visual humour. Not Going Out has great gags. There's a good mix of different styles.

I love Outnumbered, if only for the kids. Miranda I don't really like, though I admit I switched off less than an episode in. Not Going Out seemed cringey to me.

To be honest I haven't watched NGO much but the number of clips they keep playing with really funny bits in it coloured my opinion, so I'll bow to your experience there. However Outnumbered is the unfunniest thing I've ever seen, including Schindler's List.

I can understand that. Certain episodes do fall really flat, a product or the partially adlibbed nature I suppose. I've not watched a whole lot of Not Going Out either, to be honest, but Tim Vine annoys me a lot, Lee Mack can get annoying too, Miranda Hart's character always seems to be the same which is another annoyance. So it's probably have to be good to overcome my pre-conceived notions.

My Family is one I've enjoyed from the few episodes I've watched all the way through. I don't think I've seen any of season 10 though, and what I have seen might be a few years old now.

My Family is often ranked as one of the worst sitcoms of all time, a few times the scripts have been so bad that the cast have refused to perform it. The worst one is that character who came in after the guy from the BT adverts left, who was essentially a carbon copy of Phoebe from Friends, but not likeable.

I think the gold age was early to mid ninties to around the first few years off the 21st century. Part of the problem is that they can just make eternal variations on 'Have I got News for You' type shows, even though that show hasnt been good since Angus left. These get the primetime slots, because its so dreadfully average that it will pull in a large audience. A show like Abfab would probably premier on BBC3, since it would not necessarily get high viewing figures, and then it depends on word of mouth for success. I think theres always a lull after a great period of comedy, where the people who made that era great have dispersed (or simply lost it) and the new crowd have not yet made enough of a mark to garuantee high ratings to the networks. Its a shame Ricky Gervais started making awful movies, instead of staying here, and doing what hes actually good at.

Does anyone remember 'Bottom'? I still find that incredibly funny.

Bottom was awesome. :bolian:

Does anyone remember Chalk? I only saw a handful of episodes, and while not exactly Steven Moffat's answer to Fawlty Towers, I still enjoyed it for what it was.

How could anyone possibly not find the little girl from Outnumbered hilarious? I don't know what extent she's improvising, but she's about seven years old and a million times funnier and cleverer than Walliams and Lucas!
