Curious about Janeway/Chakotay...

I was a late J/C bloomer. I saw the chemistry from Season 1 onward but didn't care much for the idea at first. What got me interested was the scene in "Timeless" where Janeway looks Chakotay in the eyes over a candlelit dinner and says "We've waited long enough." That moment got me thinking it would be a good idea.

I actually thought it was a pretty unique thought until I discovered the world of on-line J/C fanfiction. Whoah! Now that was a revelation...

Same thing happened to me.

As for J/7....wow, that is one line Janeway would never cross. Don't ask me why, but I do not see it happening. Ever.

She was motherly towards Seven. Motherly.

Didn't Seven say the same thing? In Dark Frontier maybe? Or perhaps I have just been reading WAY too much fanfic lately . . . :)
Chakotay said it too Janeway in "Workforce" when she asked him if that ever had any romantic involvement.

One more reason why I don't buy into the J/C shipper thing.

And here I thought that I had Workforce memorized. Must watch it again. Ohhhhh . . . Wait . . . Stupid sister . . . Stole my seventh season. Lol. I'll have to look for it on YouTube.

I don't count the books as canon (I don't think they're considered canon since Paramount released some type of statement apparently)

The books aren't canon, with the exceptions of Jeri Taylor's Pathways and Mosaic, which fill in the backstories of Janeway and crew (but even that's in dispute, despite Jeri Taylor being a co-creator of Voyager).

But the way I see it, there is no more Voyager canon (or TOS/TNG/DS9/ENT canon for that matter). The show's over and it's not coming back, which renders "X happened but Y didn't" arguments a bit pointless, IMO. You can either say the whole thing ended with "Endgame" or find out what happened next. Just like with the episodes, some books are awesome while others suck, and they sometimes make some bad descisions (nothing on the scale of C/7, IMO), but overall I enjoy them very much. YMMV.

Just because Jeri says her stuff is canon it doesn't make it so... Maybe while she was the producer her word was law, but the girl was forced into retirement by the boys club and by then what she said on the matter about exceptions to canon wouldn't really hold any water.

If jeri really wanted all that story matter included as canon then she should have put it in the show while she had the power to do so.

Gene Rodenberry himself said that the novels (including his own expanded TMP novelization), TAS ,STV and STVI weren't canon, yet events from VI were mentioned repeatedly in Voyager (and formed the basis of an episode), Enterprise had several TAS references, and an entire scene from TAS was remade in STXI - which borrowed chracters, first names and other elements from the old novels!

I stopped trying to make any sense of it years ago:lol:.

I love Pathways and Mosaic. I have Pathways but I could only find Mosaic in pdf format so I had to read it on the computer. I try not to order online (being a student and all) so finding it in bookstores has been difficult. I also want those three Starfleet books about Janeway during her academy years but I've been unsuccessful in finding the books OR the pdf's for that. But yes I agree, some of the books are pretty great.

My first ST book was Requiem and I must've read it when I was 10 or so. It was in German and I was just a semi-fan at that point (I had JUST moved to Germany from the Bosnian war and I've always been curious and interested in Astronomy so ST (the shows) not only helped me with my German but the books (they were my mom's idea) sealed the deal and I not only had something that helped me with German but I became a fan of something that means a lot to me to this day. So don't get me wrong, I LOVE some of the books....but the books that came out in the recent years did nothing for me. The Voy books post-Endgame have disappointed me. Even Full Circle, though it was written well, completely let me down. I just don't really care for it anymore.

^That's cool. I really loved the Star Trek: Enterprise TV series, but I hate the direction those continuation novels have taken, and ended up giving up on them. So I know how you feel. Each to their own:)

I think I might actually have one of those Janeway academy books in on a bookshelf or at the botton of a cupboard somewhere. I remember loving the Geordi and Worf ones when I was a kid!

Ohhh lucky! I need to find those academy books stat. Even if it's in pdf, I really want to read them!

I have yet to see the Enterprise series. I've only seen a handful of episodes and while I didn't love it, I'd still like to watch it!

All right: Bottom line is, she never had enough chemistry with anyone and there is zero evidence to support either a pairing with Seven or with Chuckles. Any shipping with a Voyager crewmember is thus left to the fan's imagination.

I can live with that.

Look for ".lit" files instead, and then install microsoft reader (it's free.).

(then of course a .pdf(or .txt) to .lit converter is easy to find too.)

That way you can have a Stephen Hawkings(there's actually several choices if you go looking)like voice emulator to read the novel to you while you play solitaire.

if you don't want to be naughty, Pocket Books (they sell star trek right?) actually sells .lit files of their star trek novels novels. There's an entire series about the engineering Corps which were only produced as .lit files (is that right?).

Ancient, ancient, turn of the century technology.

^You can now get almost every Trek book ever made as an ebook, in a choice of formats, from Amazon and elsewhere.

Or you can get the paper books second hand from Amazon or eBay for virtually nothing more than the cost of shipping. I've filled in dozens of gaps in my collection that way.

While I do understand not everyone sees the chemistry between Janeway and Chakotay, I see it, I saw it in "Caretaker" and I saw it in "Endgame."

So do I. And so did Kate. When she was ask at a convention about the chemistry between them (J/C) she answered:
"It`s called screen chemistry. We just had it."

Also interesting to read about Resolutions:
""Among the highlights: During the original first take of the "Resolutions" angry warrior scene, Kate cried profusely because Chakotay's speech to Janeway was so beautiful. The director had her tone it down for the final
take. Kate feels that the commitment Chakotay declared for Janeway is such a beautiful sentiment that it would make anyone cry. She called her co-star "my divine Robert Beltran" and said that one night after shooting very late, she found him standing outside staring out at the stars. He told her he was thinking of trying prayer on a mystic level. At this, she looked at him dreamily and said, "Will you marry me?"

Since I know this I can`t watch the episode the same way as before.

I use a mac. Just had to throw that out there....

But thanks, I'll look into that. Although, once again I try not to buy online so if I ended up buying something online, it'd be the actual book. But for now, I need to stay away from that because once I start, I won't be able to stop.

I'm pretty positive that my lack of emotion for almost anything is due to my childhood trauma/the war but....this made me barf, it's so incredibly cheesy. I'm sorry but yikes.... :wtf:

ETA: Phew....it's not just me. My buddies from campus agree. WTF at ALL of that.

What`s so cheesy about it? I like it a lot. But I have to admit- I´m a very emotionally woman.
