Cube thing they saved Moriarty's program on

That's what I thought... Isolinear chips had another purpose. But I still need to know what to use for data storage. Would that box thing I mentioned in my last post work?

I do think that device was some sort of computer buffer. What episode was that, maybe I'll watch again and see what I can gather.

Isolinear chips have been seen as "control chips" but as I said them, and their close cousins the isolinear rods, have all been seen as data storage.

DS9 especialy used them all the time for the transfer/use of files, holoprograms, and music. We could probably infer that in Trek's time that there's no loger a distinct difference between hardware and software. Remember, we're not talking about transistors, magnetic storage, and even "electronics" here.

We're talking about a technology 300 years beyond us in a time when computers operate at FTL speeds!

Isolinear Chips/Rods are the best analgum to data storage and transfer in the 24c as we've SEEN them used in such a way.

Infact, going completely geek here, I quote from the TNG Tech Manual:

Isolinear optical chips are the primary software and data storage medium employed throughout the Enterprise comupter systems. ... Isolinear chips can ruggedized with the application of a tripolymer sealent over the refractive interface surface. This allows the chip to be handled without protective gloves. When so treated, isolinear chips are used as a convitent form of information transport. Many portable data handling devices such as tricorders, PADDs and optical readers are able to read and write to standard format isolinear chips.

Right there in black in white.

For what it's worth, the Tech Manual also says they have 2.15kq (kiloquads) of storage space.

Additionaly: Memory Alpha supports my stance that Isolinear Chips/Rods are a memory/storage device.

Isolinear optical chips (or just Isolinear chips) are data storage devices utilized in various forms of technology. They are used to store memory in Starfleet PADDs, and are a primary component of Danube-class runabouts computers. (TNG: "A Fistful of Datas", DS9: "The Jem'Hadar")

Ok... then exactly HOW do I use an isolinear chip for the purpose mentioned in the spoiler box WITHOUT using a computer on the ship's network?

I'd just have Geordi (or whoever) "invent" or construct a device he can hook Data up to. There's no need for the exsistance of such a device to already be established just make one up! That's the beauty of trek, and fiction.

:)

Or, since I can't think of much evidence to suggest that such a thing dosen't exsist, suggest Data has a port located somewhere on him removable media.

Er, I'll leave it to you to decide where this port is located.

"Now, commander, if you will just pull down my trousers..."
"Whoa... No thanks, Data. It's all you, man. Good luck!"

They should have downloaded Data's mind into a holographic form before he left in nemesis to save the day, then auto programmed his body to do what he wanted to. Then Data would have lived on as the Doctor's best friend.

Obviously all major ports are in his head. That's where he connected with the climate control center's computers.

I was trying to avoid Geordi constructing something for this purpose. I had wanted the OC whose idea this was to use an item she owned personally, thus why I asked about the holo-cubes (she enjoys writing holoprograms in her spare time, and saves them to those cubes so she can use them anywhere there's a holodeck as she's not a crewmember of any ship or station so she has no permanent home at the moment). I guess she can just present the idea...
