I've had the opportunity to finally finish all three titles in the "Crucible" trilogy, and I loved them to pieces. DRGIII did such a fantastic job with each of those tales (Provenance of Shadows remains one of my all time favourite Trek stories EVER), and although I'm sure lightning could strike twice with TNG, I don't see it happening.
Here's why I think that way - The original Star Trek was Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Sure, we had the rest of the cast, and they did some great things with them, but the stories featured prominently the 'big three'. TNG was definitely more of an ensemble show. There was more going on, more stories to tell, and more characters to look at. And, as much as I love TNG (it's what I watched first, so it'll always be special), I see a TNG style of 'Crucible' not working so well. Again, this is just an opinion of mine, and yours may vary.
As for the trilogy being post-Destiny, I welcome it!! The Trek universe has changed a great deal, and I think that continuing to move forward will be a good thing. I can't wait for it. There's so many new stories to tell. There's ramifications from "Indistinguishable From Magic", "Watching The Clock" and the "Typhon Pact" novels that would make great stories, plus the buildup leading to the destruction of Romulus that sets the stage for Abrahm's "Star Trek". I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it outright. People were flustered when they learned Destiny dealt with the Borg....well, look at Destiny now. Seriously....almost three years later after reading 'Gods of Night' and I still go back and re-read it. So, there ya go.
