I took the liberty to edit STEPhon IT's character, "Xavatto", and it seems more like a total re-write. I tried to keep the core essence of the character while toning down the parts I felt were too over-the-top. I also rounded out the background to make it a little more logical, pardon the pun, as to how and why he ended up in Star Fleet and on this mission.
I really wanted to run this by the original author before posting, but her account doesn't allow for private messaging. STEPhon: Please do let me know if there is anything you find unacceptable in the write up. I'm leaving your name on the by-line because at the core, I feel, this is still the character you created.
One last edit I made was to change the names, if for no other reason than I have no clue how to pronounce "Xavatto".

Family status: Sovan was born in space on a trading outpost near the planet Vulcan, and has one older brother, Subin, who graduated from the Vulcan Center for Linguistic Studies, and two much-younger siblings. Their father was a merchant and pushed his sons hard to go into academia, so when Sovan dropped out of medical school without becoming a doctor, he and his father had a falling out. They resolved their differences just before he joined Star Fleet, and his father died soon after. His relationship with Subin, on the other hand, began to break down when he joined the cult, and completely collapsed when their father died. One of the side-effects of his unorthodox ways is he has learned to control his pon farr urges and so has yet to take a wife or father children.
Personality / mannerisms: Sovan is an open-minded person who loves company, and values the human capability to accept diversity. He has a great sense of humor and often tells jokes with a very dry wit. While he usually maintains an outward appearance of utter calm, he is known to display his emotions especially when he finds joy and happiness. Absolutely refuses to swap war-stories about his combat actions or his work in the emergency room. He has been driven to anger on occasion, the result of which is always quite exuberant.
Hobbies / interests: He's a bit of a renaissance man and has been exploring art, music, and entertainment from Earth's 20th/21st century. He is fascinated with jazz and blues, and recently expanded his interest to R&B and soul music. Continues to study religion and philosophy from a wide variety of cultures in an attempt to find his own personal inner peace.
Background: As noted above, Sovan has lost contact with most of his immediate family, although his mother does keep him informed of their whereabouts and significant family events. When he made peace with his father, he discovered he has an aunt, his father's half-sister, who also was ostracized (she for marrying a human). He has since built a strong relationship with his cousin, T'Kwaal, and recently sponsored her application to Star Fleet Medical Academy.
Sovan is naturally gifted in learning languages, which was another cause for contention with his brother. Subin criticized him for not utilizing his talents and instead going into medicine. Subin is likewise a gifted linguist and, serving in Vulcan Security, has done work for Star Fleet Intelligence. Twice, the brothers crossed paths on a professional level, and both times the meetings were strained.
Labeled a cultist on his home world, Sovan was denied re-admission to the Vulcan Science Academy to complete his doctorate, and was unable to find employment in any hospital or trauma center. With few options left, he applied to Star Fleet and was turned down for Academy as an Officer Candidate (no doubt due to pressure from the Vulcan government), but he was accepted as an enlisted corpsman.
At first glance, it would appear that his career progression was slow, but the truth of the matter is he declined promotion several times, once to PO3, three times to PO2, and twice to PO1, as he moved up the ranks at a pace he felt comfortable with. He turned down promotion to Chief Petty Officer once, telling his superiors that he will accept the promotion only if it comes with a guaranteed six-year assignment as an instructor at Star Fleet Medical Academy.
His aunt told him of a dark secret in their family's ancestry, something he has not shared with anyone. He was worried that the mandatory DNA screening, which all Vulcans were subjected to after the discovery that they and Romulans are cousins, would reveal this secret. Either the tests didn't prove it true, or Star Fleet missed its significance.

I made a couple minor edits and changed the names. I think it's a little silly that "all Vulcan names begin with an S", but that's what readers have come to expect.
