Spoilers Crisis on Infinite Earths Discussion (CW Event Spoiler Thread)

Also, the whole conceit for even having a secret identity has sort of lost its significance in the information age - especially amongst one's closest friends and family.

Until the Joker strips you naked, tortures you, and then surrounds you with huge portraits of your bleeding out daughter he just crippled.

Ironically, it's your daughter who has the secret identity to protect you.

Joker found Jason "Robin" Todd's missing mommy, lost for a decade down a rabbit whole of bad choices, and tricked her into killing her own child.

He's gotta know everything, sometimes, depending on which meds he is on.
But secret knowledge wasn't necessary in the case of "The Killing Joke." He was trying to drive Jim Gordon nuts, and Batgirl or not, it was never a secret that Jim Gordon had a daughter.

Ah.. All cought up! Mostly.. Haven't watched batwoman yet but next week.
I'm enjoying crisis, the Brandon/Tyler fight was a bit of a letdown with a tv budget.. But hey.. Do what u can do. ( city and flying were not great effects) like Brandon as supes, and seeing Kevin as Batman was Squee material.. Even though he played him as an ass.. ( still hoping for him to play old bruce in beyond movie or tv!)
I like this version of lex, best live action version ever..

How about... When Earth-2 is restored, Harry gets his genius back. None of the other Wellseseseses have worked as well(s) as Harry, so it'd be good to have him return to the fold.

Or how about, on Earth-38, the Leviathan nonsense just goes away and we get a better plotline? Doesn't seem likely, though.

I would prefer, when Earth 1 is rebooted, we discover Beth was rescued by Batman the first week she was kidnapped, and Alice is the result of a Catherine Hamilton experiment gone awry.

At that point, did Kate even know that? I don't get the sense that Harbinger gave her a detailed briefing before spiriting her away.

I figured having Supergirl and Superman in the same room would have lead Kate to question if she had crossed over to Kara's home planet.

Agreed with this. I feel like I'm at odds with most comics/superhero fans on this point, because the general consensus seems to be, "The more costumes, the better."

I feel that is, low-key, one of the biggest comics with modern superhero stories. When everyone's special, nobody's special.

On these shows, I try to focus less on whether the FX are realistic and more on the coolness of what they show. After all, the whole thing is based on stories that were originally told in cartoon form. So photorealism is optional here.

Really, that's another reason I don't like the secret-identity trope. Constantly lying to your best friends, family, romantic partner, etc. is a jerky thing to do. And the excuse for it is lame -- "I hide the truth from you so my enemies won't target you." What difference does that make? Superheroes' best friends constantly get attacked/kidnapped by bad guys anyway. If a bad guy just thought they might know the secret, they'd still get tortured whether they knew or not. Keeping the secret is only about the heroes protecting themselves, not their loved ones. If their loved ones knew they were connected to a superhero, that would make them more aware of potential danger and better able to protect themselves. So it's a hypocritical trope. Keeping your identity secret from the general public is one thing, but the people close to you deserve to know.
Amen to that. And the pre-Crisis Superman was incredible hypocritical, because he and Lois Lane were effectively a couple, so I don't know how many times the bad guys kidnapped her for their nefarious schemes. Still he didn't reveal his secret identity to her for her own good or whatever.

And there are still people out there that are missing the "good old days" of "Superman-Lois-Clark" triangle. WTF guys?!?

Well Lois was always kidnapped etc. For being close to supes anyways.. Nothing would have changed in that regard if he told her the truth. Just there personal relationship would change.

Exactly. The problem with the rationale is that the superhero identity always hangs around with the same people as the civilian identity, so the association is going to be known anyway.

I once came up with an idea for a realistic present-day superhero comic, one that would handle every aspect as plausibly as I could, and one aspect was that the heroine strove to avoid any interaction in her hero mode with the people she associated with in civilian life -- not only because of the above issue, but for fear of being recognized. Although it's hard to pull off something like that in a TV series, since you need to limit the size of the regular cast.

Well, actually, even Lois was fed up with the situation and the couple separated a couple of years before the Crisis.

By the way, I checked, and it seems that aside from the season finale of Watchmen tomorrow, there are no live-action DC productions being released anywhere during the gap between Crisis Part 3 and Part 4. And Watchmen is apparently fictional within the Crisis multiverse, at least on Earth-666. So the entire live-action DC multiverse effectively has ceased to exist for the duration! Probably just a coincidence because of the holiday break, but it's a nice convergence that there's essentially nothing to break the illusion.

(Although in animation, there are some new episodes of Harley Quinn, Teen Titans Go!, and DC Super Hero Girls coming out during the gap.)

Even when I was a kid, it was hard to buy the "I must conceal my true identity to protect my friends" explanation when Lois and Jimmy were being menaced on a weekly basis anyway.

It happened so long ago, that the word "Cuck" was not at all yet very popular with certain people.

It was only one panel long, but Lex Luthor attempted to give Clark Kent an intervention mid monologue.

"You idiot, she doesn't love you, she loves the alien, they're using you, you should just go."

What are you going on about now.
I have no idea how this relates to anything to what you quoted.
