Cremation or Burial?

I don't know, I go back and forth on the idea of donating my body to a medical school, but between cremation and burial I'll go with cremation.

This.

^Reminds me: I actually have registered in all the appropriate places that they can take any spare parts I might have (that are still useable) and use the rest for whatever they'd like. :bolian:

I really can't stand the idea of being buried in the ground and being eaten by maggots. It's just gross and totally freaks me out. Yeah, I know I'll be dead...but still. I don't want my body's last act to be 'making a disgusting mess'.

Also, I'm kinda claustrophobic, and being buried in a little box in the cold dark ground where there is no air just doesn't appeal. It's irrelevant that I won't actually NEED the air - I just want it there.

So right now, I'm leaning toward getting cremated and put in an above-ground mausoleum....or getting my ashes scattered over somewhere I love - probably over the mountains outside of Anchorage, Alaska. It's cleaner and just feels more sanitary.

I don't think I could do that. The thought of my smiling face being out there while medical students poke around in my body...not appealing.

I mean, what happens when they're done with you? Do they throw you away? Or can your family still have a decent funeral for you?

Cremation all the way. Then scatter the ashes wherever they want (possibly not the toilet, but i couldn't care less). I stated that to my fiancé and my parents numerous times, but I'm counting on my sweetheart for that because I have the sneaking suspicion that my parents would want to bury me with a christian funeral (thus virtually negating all my principles in life...). I often think about getting a last will on that, but that's the only one thing that I'm superstitious about.
However, if they want they can build a monumental death shrine for me, where they can worship my awesomeness, not my decaying body.

In the UK I believe you are cremated, and they hold a service of remembrance and thanks every year down in London for friends, family and medical professionals to attend.

My father in law donated his body to the medical school. After so many days, I don't remember how long, you could either claim the remains or the school would cremate them. We chose cremation.

As to the "decent funeral", we had a memorial service, complete with the color guard he was entitled to as a WWII vet. The only differences were there was no coffin and it wasn't a funeral.

Just throw me in the bog or something. Seriously. I'd prefer to rot away in nature than in some box. Cremation sounds okay, but entirely too much effort. I'm dead, who cares? Not me, that's for damn sure. I'm too busy being dead!

I think I will want to be cremated when I die. I don't see the need of having my body lay around in the grave. Sounds disgusting.

That being said, I will insist that the ashes given to my family actually be *my* ashes.

I want to be buried, after an elaborate funeral involving a horse drawn caisson and 30 or 40 paid young female mourners. And I finally want to own a lot (albeit a small one) virtually forever.

Besides, who doesn't want to join the Zombie Army when the uprising occurs? :D

Except you won't own it forever. You'll own it for a hundred years or so until an archeologist says, "Oooh, this'd be interesting."

I want to be cremated. And, if there's a neat trail race that I had run for many years, I would like to be spread at that race.

I got it written into my will I want to be cremated and that I dont care what happens to my ashes. I got a whole bunch of trash bags from work they can use to dump my ashes in or they can dump me by the side of the road, I'll eventually blow away. It dont make sense to pay thousands of dollars to bury somebody who dont care about all that nonsense.

I will be cremated and put into an elaborate urn which will be the central exhibit at the RJDiogenes Museum & Grill.

If everybody keeps getting buried, someday the whole planet will be one big graveyard.

Isn't it already with the amount of dead people and animals from over the past billion years or so?

Interesting question actually. There are many different estimates on how many people have ever lived since Homo Sapiens is believed to have first existed, but most seem to come in at around 100 billion, with 6% of them being alive right now. So in fact only around 94 billion people have ever died.

I think those are very rough estimates, but it's not so hard to believe when you consider the massive popuation explosion of the last 100 years.
