Creator of the Big Mac dies at 98

Michael "Jim" Delligatti, who according to his son ate at least one 540-calorie Big Mac a week for decades, was 98.

Delligatti's franchise was based in Uniontown, not far from Pittsburgh, when he invented the chain's signature burger in 1967 after deciding customers wanted a bigger sandwich. Demand exploded as Delligatti's sandwich spread to the rest of his 47 stores in Pennsylvania and was added to the chain's national menu in 1968.

Almost a slight to say that he just invented the Big Mac. One of the biggest and earliest franchisees, big part of why McDonalds serves a breakfast menu, and one of the early creators of the Ronald McDonald House, as well. Guy was probably just as important/influential to the company as Ray Croc. Kinda a big deal.

Having done that lookup, though, it makes me want to try an original Big Mac, before it slowly morphed into the questionable food product that most fast food has become. Made with real ingredients and burger patties, it was probably something pretty tasty. I still like them, but can only picture them made out of actual food...

The one I had today looked like it was made from all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and on a sesame seed bun, but when I tasted it, I thought I could taste Monsanto, and ennui.

Weirdly where I live they have morphed from being greasy, awful things full of dead iceberg pieces to looking exactly like their photos. Nice tomato, big leafy green lettuce.. they are vastly improved from what they were some years back. I like them for the pickles, the most important part of any hamburger and not commonly used in Aus so I end up with a Big Mac a few times a year when I really want the pickles. PICKLES!

The one of the single worst decisions I've made as an adult, one I regretted immediately and throughout the actual act...was taking advantage of a Big Mac buy-one-get-one-free deal.

Which is ironic because I never even ate one until I was about 28.
