Congratulations, @DarthTimon ! Hoping to get there, myself.
Speaking of which, I'm making some changes to my Sword & Sorcery stories, particularly the character I previously named Uénunna. For those who've read the story, maybe you noticed that she's supposed to be of the people who would become Native Americans, namely the Sioux. Now, remember that I write these stories in German, so I used to think it a good idea to change the spelling of some of the words and names to give German readers a better idea of how to actually pronounce them, so Winúnŋa, the Dakota word for first-born daughter, became Uénunna, and the Nadouessioux became the Naduéssuh.
After I recently rewatched some of the old Karl May movies featuring the fictional character of Apache chief Winnetou, I was inspired to research the phenomenon of German fascination with Native Americans (or "Indianer", as the German language describes them, as opposed to the "Inder", the natives of India) - it's a real thing, people, it even has its own Wikipedia article - and I learned how, while the image of Native Americans in German fiction has been a positive one, it was also romanticizing and, quite often, disrespectful and stereotypical. Also, the Karl May Museum displayed some genuine scalps. After they were contacted by the tribe the scalps were ascribed to, and asked to return them, they took them from the public display to "study their origin". That was years ago, and they still have not been returned.
And I recognized that my character played into this German obsession with the "Indianer", and that I better do some more research in order to make sure that the character was as respectful as possible. I have no illusions, the Native Americans are not a uniform entity, so if two persons of the Dakotas were to read my stories, one might be fine with it while the other might be offended, just as I have seen both reactions from Native Americans over Winnetou. There's no getting around that. I also don't want to change the character's ethnicity, that wouldn't be a solution, either. I choose to go with as respectful a portrayal as is possible to me, over eradication of a Sioux character altogether.
And I recognized that my willy-nilly changing of spelling of these words might come off as disrespectful. Maybe they are. I certainly didn't intend them to be so. And that is why I'm going over what I've already written and changing the spelling back to the proper way. So, the heroine character of Uénunna is now Winúnŋa, and the Naduéssuh are the Nadouessioux. And if German readers start mispronouncing them, I'll just have to correct them.
I would also encourage everybody to learn about the many different cultures of the Native Americans, and I'd also encourage the use of Native American characters in fiction not only in a Wild West setting, but in a modern context, and not just as side characters, as well (seriously, DC Comics, bring back Detective Ohiyesa Smith, just don't use his old nickname).
Well, considering my stories are Sword & Sorcery fantasy set in a fictional, pre-historic proto-European era, it's less about historical accuracy, but rather cultural accuracy, as well as a general respect. You're absolutely right - it is important to be accurate with history. Thankfully we live in an era where access to historic data is easy. Good luck!
#After a suggestion in QS&F, we've decided to start a dedicated thread for posting your personal artwork, creative writing, poetry, crafts, hobbies, photography, music, etc.
If you feel like your work is extensive enough that it warrants its own thread, you can still do that too.
Keep in mind that this is a PG-13 family friendly board, so don't cross the line with the content. The same rules that would apply on the rest of the board apply here as well.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing your contributions to the thread.
Does anyone know the game Bioshock Infinite?
I basically took the prop plastic skyhook and rebuilt it with a working motor to function more like the games.
I took this:

Which is closer to the game:
