Although I haven't been a fan of everything she's done, somehow, I can really picture Megan Fox Faye.
Spike requires someone a little more "cool" laid back, like Brad Pitt maybe. Reeves is more "disinterested" laid back.

Regarding comparisons to Speed Racer, Cowboy Bebop and Speed Racer are radically different. Sure, they're both animation from Japan, but elements such as character design, style, animation quality etc. are radically different. For instance, the three principal characters have small, wider eyes as oppossed the regular orbish eyes of anime characters. The only exception is "Ed", but even she has a somewhat more lanky physique than your average anime character.
Speed Racer also is well known from the 60's, whereas Bebop's following is more niche and more recently developed.

She isn't? It's been a while since I watched it, but I have the vague recollection of Faye as a young teenager wearing a Japanese school uniform.
Back to casting Ed; maybe it's because I watched the show with the subtitles on (I rarely enjoy dubbed shows or movies) but I wonder if Ed would work better in film if she spoke Japanese the whole time. I think it'd be better than translating some of the weird dialogue she comes out with.
I'll have to check out the english dub at some point as I know there are some unusually good ones (GiTS in all it's forms and at least one version of the Akira dub) though my preference for subtitles isn't an anime thing, it applies to cinema in general. So that means all non-english language films from Pan's Labyrinth to Nikita to Seven Samurai. Hell, I wouldn't watch a dubbed Kurosawa film if you paid me.
