you must hate a lot of movie posters...
Leaving aside the fact that most movie posters today are indeed incredibly lazy and worthy of contempt, that's not what's going on here. The problem with the German covers is that they often combine painterly backgrounds, or, in this case, painterly bodies with heads taken from photos. It's just a clashing of styles that makes them look half-assed.
I don't know, I get the feeling that the whole "Germany gets the better covers!" meme is just the "the grass is greener on the other side" effect. Since I actually
am German, I may be immune to it ...
Edit: Good example of what I mean:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...6796548230.147081.270679318230&type=3&theater - that's just
terrible. Photoshop amateur hour, a basic collage of photos with heavy filters on them and some sort of suture brush probably from a clipart/asset CD.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...6796548230.147081.270679318230&type=3&theater - again with the horrible heavy filtering to make it appear like it's not a photo, except they're not fooling anyone. There's certainly no aesthetic value to the filter. And why not apply it to the background creature? The resulting difference in sharpness is jarring.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...6796548230.147081.270679318230&type=3&theater - the "Unity" cover, larger. The Sisko headshot is bog-standard, I think I have an autograph card using the same photo. The Kira shot is actually quite well-chosen, but it's of noticably lower quality than the Sisko photo - I'm almost tempted to call it an upscaled screencap from an episode, though I guess it can't really be res-wise.
