A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Emily Coutts is a new science fiction fan, courtesy of her work on Star Trek: Discovery. The actress liked the idea of...

It's news that she has an appliance added to the side of her head. I thought she shaved her side. So the make-up artists had me fooled.

I feel like I learned more about the character just reading this article than what the show actually gave. I really hope the writers drop this Big 3 stuff and give the other cast members a chance to shine. Just because Star Trek did it doesn't mean you have to do it too. The good shows on these days are ensamble shows.

To be fair, she's a pretty low-tier character, listed among the "co-star" credits which means she's not really a priority for story material. As it is, season 1 already gave Detmer more material than her status requires.

She's mostly a jargon speaker on the bridge, though she gets some extra screen attention. There was her awkward reunion with Michael in episode 3, she got a boyfriend at the party in Harry Mudd's Groundhog day. In the Mirror Universe she was XO of the Shenzhou, though that just meant she walked around looking pissed off. Then she's seen among the crew who decide to forgive Lt. Tyler for killing Dr. Culber, and then for some reason in the finale she gets a medal.

I haven't seen the last two or three episodes yet. Must be where the majority of her dialogue is at.

Edit:
I like what she has to say about the character. I think that if more of the background characters on the bridge are given a chance to grow and participate in the stories, the show will benefit.

Actually, I think the Mirror Universe storyline is probably the most talkative Detmer gets.
In all seriousness, there was no logic to who got medals. It's basically "if you're a speaking character, you get a medal." So what about the crew who don't get lines, or even seen? No medals for them? Ariam the Cyborg got a medal and all she does is sit on the bridge and make whirring noises.

You're not wrong. It's possible I suppose that everyone on the ship got a medal but they had a separate ceremony for non-bridge crew. Otherwise, the medals should have just gone to the people who were directly involved in the action. Maybe the logic there was that the bridge crew was more involved in the heroic acts than the people who weren't on the bridge. It does tend to be where big things happen, after all.

Except, Stamets and Tilly aren't bridge officers and they got medals. Culber even got posthumous medals at that very ceremony, and I don't think we ever saw him on the bridge. It literally was a speaking character recognition only. A crew of 130 just saved the Federation from war and Earth from being conquered. So ten random people get medals directly from the Federation Council, including one guy who's been dead for the past month or whatever, and the other 120 are ignored.

To be fair, Stamets and Tilly were still directly involved in the events that ended the war. Stamets got the ship to Q'onoS, and Tilly was with the away team. I still generally agree with you though.

I don’t care if she is the lowest of the low. She’s a lieutenant and a bridge officer. She’s also really unique. I would love to learn more about her.

I like that background characters can now have more elaborate looks rather than just being plain human like it used to be on old Trek. One thing I did like about the Kelvin films is that we had more elaborate looking aliens in the crew, to reinforce the idea that the Federation really is a gathering of many species rather than just a human organization (which was always because budget couldn't afford more make-up in shows).

I like that this carried over onto the new show. If the show gives background characters like Detmer something to do, fine, otherwise she's no different than Ensign Gates as far as I'm concerned.
