Countdown/Novels

^Well, you've clearly missed the fundamental point of Star Trek, which is that different isn't automatically wrong. It's obnoxious and closed-minded to insist that something is "wrong" just because it doesn't fit your personal preference. The only thing that would be wrong is forcing all creators of fiction to do everything according to the same rigid formula.
Or it could be that Freman used "right" and "wrong" as shorthand for "the approach I prefer" and "the approach I don't," the way people do when discussing opinions, and your condescending explanation of how he missed the point of life, the universe, and everything is completely off base and not at all helpful.

That's exactly what I meant by right and wrong, Brendan. I completely understand that in the past, it was next to impossible to have a EU in ST where the books and comic and video games all fit together with the televised Star Trek (and movies) since there was so much televised stuff coming out.

I just think that now that we're confined to only movies, and ones that take place in a parallel universe, there is no excuse to not make things tie together. In my opinion it is just laziness. It is more of a challenge as a writer, when playing in somebody else's universe, to try and write the stories that you want to, AND make it fit together with what other's have written. It shouldn't limit the stories you can tell, as it's been mentioned on here. It should make it more fun and exciting to try and make things fit, and if it challenges you, well, then that's only making you stronger as an author. (I am currently putting together my own comic book series, which stars a character who constantly interacts with characters from other comic companies, so I do know a little of what I'm talking about).

And contrary to the opinions on the board, most Star trek fans I've met actually feel the same way. I personally know around 50 Star Trek fans, only 2 of which post on ST message boards, and of that fifty only around 3 or 4 of them don't care that the books don't fit with each other. the majority would prefer the fiction to fit with each other and the shows.

It's more fun and satisfying having one big storyline to follow, instead of reading a book and knowing it has no bearing whatsoever on the next book I read.

If you guys tie together the novels with with Countdown, WHY does that have to be the end of the TNG line????? As a writer myself, I can think of about 5 ways off the top of my head to keep the line going with the characters where they are at the end of the comic. Why quit? Come up with something exciting, and everyone will still continue to read the books! Might be a bit more work, but well work is how you earn your paycheck.

Christopher, I'd be happy to introduce you to examples of "condescending" and "insulting" at Shore Leave if you'd like. Those are two areas of approach with which I have quite a bit of familiarity.

Oh good, you're going.
