Counselor Hugh Cambridge

A character who has a mind of his own and wasn't very popular with the rest of Voyager's crew at the beginning.

I'm saddened that neither Jarem nor Kaz survived the Borg incursion. But with Cambridge still aboard Voyager it's still fun.

People usually feel uncomfortable to be psycho-analyzed from inside out. Then his grumpy behavior. But I think he is a well-versed counselor, although with an unorthodox approach. You simply have to get to know him. And he is a different kind of counselor than we have seen before, (especially compared to Ezri and Deanna). And he has his flaws.

What do you think of Hugh Cambridge?

I think Cambridge is a great character. I'm not so keen on his relationship with Seven. It feels a bit forced, though not as much as Seven/Chakotay.

LOL am not quite sure how I'll vote in this poll. My attitude towards Cambridge has kind of evolved from "What a know-it-all PITB tho maybe sometimes fairly interesting" to "Well Chakotay grew to like him so maybe not so bad," to "Poor guy might be getting shafted (in one aspect)." Will have to think a little if I can even decide on one of the included categories lol.

I'm not through the the past two Voyager books, but I honestly can't stand Cambridge. I'm also not a fan of characters who are obvious homages/pastiches, so the thinly veiled Dr. House routine may be setting me off. And the Cambridge/Seven romance is... uh... well... icky, tacky, insipid... let me not go on at length. Definitely the weakest link in Kirsten Beyer's otherwise 5-bajillion star relaunch. He's certainly no Dr. Kaz!

Yes I'm still regretting Dr. Kaz's fate myself; IMO he was an interesting character too soon disposed of. Tho am kind of also warming up to Dr. Sharak.

I love him! Never read the Golden books so I can't speak to Kaz. But Cambridge is a riot! I especially loved his interactions with the Doctor in The Eternal Tide.

Yes I'm still regretting Dr. Kaz's fate myself; IMO he was an interesting character too soon disposed of.

I agree that Kaz's death was a disappointment, but I also believe that for the Borg Invasion to have the meaning it should, we needed to lose people. I can therefore accept the character's disappearance as a justified move and make my peace with it, as at least it bolsters the emotional impact of the Big Event rather than truly wastes him.

It's an uneasy acceptance, but I'll let the novels have this one. So long as they don't do this too often, of course.

EDIT: As for Cambridge, I like him. He's a rich character. I've never watched "House" (I watch hardly any television) so I have no familiarity with the existing character his mannerisms are apparently a nod to.

At least Kaz should have survived. But with the Joining stop on Trill they would have put the symbiont back to Mak'ala.

I feel the House comparisons are overstated. Cambridge has some of House's irreverence, snark, and rebelliousness, but he's far more empathetic and emotionally/socially functional, he's not a drug addict, and he's English rather than American. He's based more on Hugh Laurie in general than House in particular.

His counseling approaches are not to everyone's liking and some of the Voyager crew are uncomfortable around him. I know my fair share about psychologists and psychiatrists, not by undergoing therapy, but having worked with some of them. You have to be ready to let yourself in for a therapy. Some of the therapists are very forthright and some people have difficulties to deal with that.

As to Cambridge: he's not an addict, but has to deal with personal problems when confronted with a possible loss of Seven.
What happens if the counselor needs a counselor?
He has to realize that he needs help. And he needs his friends.

Exactly why he isn't just a copy of Dr. House. He's more capable of emotional connection with other people. He doesn't pretend that love is a delusion.

I don't watch Dr. House on a regular basis. I appreciate Hugh Laurie as a singer and musician, but I don't picture him as a possible actor to portray Cambridge.

It is more the name Hugh they have in common than anything else.
